You will have:

  • A relevant degree and very strong Microsoft Excel skills (essential).
  • Highly numerate, detail-oriented, and organised.
  • Hands-on experience in accounting and financial reporting.
  • Part-qualified (ACCA or AAT) or a willingness to study (with company support).
  • Experience with Sage Accounts and/or the insurance sector is desirable.
  • A clear communicator and team player with the confidence to take ownership.
Responsibilities

WOULD YOU THRIVE IN A HANDS-ON, LEADERSHIP ROLE WHERE YOUR WORK DIRECTLY SHAPES A GROWING BUSINESS?

Wessex Group is an independent provider of outsourced insurance services, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, supporting major insurers and intermediaries in the personal lines market. With a strong reputation, a growing client base, and a customer-focused culture, we offer a rewarding environment where individual contributions make a genuine impact.
As part of our succession planning, we are now looking for an Accounts Manager to join our team in Winchester. Our current long-serving manager is set to retire in 2026, and this role offers a rare and valuable opportunity to work alongside them during a comprehensive handover period. You will gain deep insight into our systems and procedures and be fully supported in making the transition into a senior leadership position.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As Accounts Manager, you will take full responsibility for the company’s daily financial operations, supported by a team of two Accounts Assistants. Reporting directly to the Joint Managing Director (a Chartered Accountant), you will lead the finance function, deliver accurate and timely reporting, and ensure strong internal controls. This is an office-based, full-time role offering a supportive environment, clear responsibilities, and scope to grow.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Controlling BACS submission processes and managing banking authorities.
  • Maintaining controls over premium and claims bordereaux, settlements, adjustments, and indemnity commissions.
  • Overseeing payroll, pensions, benefits, and HMRC submissions.
  • Producing timely monthly management accounts and ensure full reconciliation of all ledgers and control accounts.
  • Managing the year-end audit and liaise with external auditors.
  • Leading, supporting, and developing the accounts team to ensure high-quality delivery and team resilience.
  • Contributing financial insights to business decisions and identifying process improvements.
  • Supporting system and reporting enhancements and implement process improvements across the department.
