Description The Guidance Center (TGC) is the Community Mental Health Center and Certified Behavioral Health Clinic serving Leavenworth, Atchison, and Jefferson counties in Kansas. The Guidance Center (TGC) is currently seeking a Peer Support Specialist to be the newest member of our innovative interdisciplinary team. This position is accountable for the provision of peer support activities designed to promote skills for coping with and managing psychiatric symptoms while facilitating the utilization of community resources and the enhancement of community living skills. Services will be provided individually or in a group setting with adults. Most consumer contacts will occur in community locations where the person lives, works, attends school, and/or socializes. Primary Duties: Assist consumers with regaining the ability to make independent choices and to take a proactive role in treatment Assist consumers with identifying and effectively responding to or avoiding identified precursors or triggers that result in functional impairments. Assist consumers in articulating personal goals for recovery Train and coach individuals in positive skill-building techniques for improved life management (e.g., problem solving, identifying and overcoming fears and negative self-talk). Recognize and demonstrate sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences. Help others succeed by demonstrating exceptional interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively with persons with severe and persistent mental illness and addiction and the ability to react constructively in a wide variety of situations. Effectively manage conflict, promote change and growth, and inspire the development of all clients served. Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies. Value and respect every individual’s recovery experience. Recognize and demonstrate sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences. QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Required: Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Preferred: Some post-high school education in the field of Human Services EXPERIENCE: Required: Must self-identify as a former primary consumer of behavioral healthcare services and lived experience. Must have had no psychiatric hospital admissions for a minimum of one year.
