EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience is required (and 10 years is preferred) in news organization leadership roles, specifically supervising writers, editors, photographers and designers or art directors;
  • Extensive professional entrepreneurial experience starting and overseeing media businesses because this role will involve building collaborations around an innovative media literacy initiative;
  • Extensive background in collaborating with high-level professionals in various industries because the growing outreach needs of the Journalism and Sports Media Sequence (including around media literacy issues) will involve collaborations within the School of Communications, throughout the various departments of BYU and off-campus to the business and academic communities;An innovative outlook that combines deep personal professional journalism experience with a willingness to help students, faculty and staff explore and pursue appropriate new approaches to expand the reach and impact of journalism content and journalism education.

Responsibilities
  • Assigned to Comms 491R to provide support to the journalism and sports media curriculum in both classroom and lab settings;
  • Provide expert-level oversight and student mentoring for the visual, design, art direction, photography and multimedia aspects of the Daily Universe website and Magazine (particularly given the current leave of absence of a staff member during Fall 2025);
  • Support the journalism and sports media full-time faculty and students in various lab-related classes, including Comms. 321 and Comms. 490—This support may include determining editorial content directions and seeing mentored student projects through to successful completion and publication;
  • Work with full-time faculty to lead a news and media literacy initiative that will involve editorial content, professional or industry research, training modules, panel discussions and presentations, and collaborations on possible conferences with other academic sequences in the School of Communications, other departments at BYU and within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as the broader academic and business communities;
  • Collaborate with full-time faculty and students to ensure timely and relevant publication of Daily Universe editorial products, including the e-mail newsletter, social media, website, and print Magazine.
