POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Administrative Investigator will be responsible for conducting thorough and impartial investigations into a wide range of incidents, including inmate assaults, contraband trafficking, staff misconduct, and allegations of sexual abuse or harassment under PREA standards. The ideal candidate will possess strong investigative skills, exceptional attention to detail, and a deep understanding of correctional operations and legal compliance.

APPLICANT BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS:

The Administrative Investigator is responsible for conducting thorough and accurate investigations into the personal, criminal, and professional history of applicants seeking employment at MRRJ. This role ensures that only qualified and trustworthy individuals are hired to maintain the safety, security, and integrity of the facility environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in law enforcement, corrections, or investigative work.
  • Virginia DCJS Jail Officer or Law Enforcement certification.
  • Strong knowledge of criminal law, evidence handling, and investigative procedures.
  • Familiarity with PREA standards and trauma-informed interview techniques (preferred).
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and analytical skills.
  • PREA Investigator training (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
    · Must be a U.S. Citizen
    · Possess a valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license
    · Have the ability to pass a physical examination and drug screening
    · Have the ability to pass an extensive criminal history and background check
    · Be a high school graduate or equivalent

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review employment applications to verify completeness and identify areas requiring further inquiry. Begin the applicant’s file and create a folder. Add the applicant to the employment spreadsheet.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with applicants, references, former employers, neighbors, and others familiar with the candidate’s character and history.
  • Verify information related to employment history, education, military service, and certifications.
  • Conduct criminal history checks through local, state, and national databases (VCIN, NCIC, etc.).
  • Review driving records & civil litigation records for concerns relevant to the position.
  • Contact prior correctional, law enforcement, or military employers to determine eligibility for rehire and verify any disciplinary issues.
  • Coordinate polygraph exams, psychological evaluations, and drug testing as required by agency policy
  • Document findings in a comprehensive background investigation report for review by hiring supervisors and command staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including EEOC and FCRA guidelines.
  • Assist with re-investigations for current staff as required by policy (e.g., promotional assessments, security clearances).
  • Participate in hiring panels or oral boards as needed.
