JOB OVERVIEW

The Gitwangak Education Society is seeking a passionate and dedicated Adult School Instructor to join our team at Wilp Si Sa’t’ama – Gitwangak Adult School. The successful candidate will foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally rich learning environment, helping adult learners complete their Adult Dogwood and prepare for post-secondary education, employment, and personal growth.
This role blends the best of both worlds — modern, innovative teaching methods and the rich traditions of Gitxsan language and culture — to empower learners to excel academically and in the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate in good standing
  • Valid BC Driver’s License
  • Recent successful adult education teaching experience (grades 10–12; Adult Dogwood)
  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to inspire high expectations in learners
  • Knowledge of employment readiness programming
  • Creativity and innovation in lesson delivery
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and community engagement abilities
  • Experience incorporating Indigenous culture/language into curriculum (Gitxsan knowledge an asset; willingness to learn required)
  • Knowledge of DRUMS program, Connected Classrooms, and BC First Peoples courses an asset
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, community, and leadership
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with BC curriculum standards and adult education goals
  • Facilitate interactive, culturally relevant classroom experiences that encourage participation and respect
  • Support students in grades 10–12 and Adult Dogwood courses, including English First Peoples 10–12, BC First Peoples 12, and Connected Classrooms
  • Incorporate Gitxsan language, culture, and on-the-land learning into instruction where possible
  • Assess student progress, provide constructive feedback, and maintain accurate attendance and performance records
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners, including those with special needs (support and assess, complete IEPs)
  • Assist students with online academic courses and the DRUMS program
  • Coordinate adult education, cultural, and employment readiness programs in collaboration with the COOP and Education Coordinator
  • Manage student behaviour in alignment with school-wide rules and discipline policies
  • Plan and host cultural workshops and training opportunities for students
  • Maintain strong relationships with parents, community members, and colleagues
  • Prepare proposals, reports, and other documentation as required
