The primary role of a Paediatric Advanced Trainee is provision of care for patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings, at a level of skill and autonomy consistent with Advanced Training in Paediatrics. The role includes initial assessment of infants, rational use of investigations, ongoing management and monitoring progress, and organising timely discharge and appropriate follow up.
The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a senior member of the Junior Medical Staff within a clinical team. In matters relating directly to patient care, he/she is responsible to the Specialist in charge of the patient’s care and the Fellow(s). He/she is responsible for supervision and teaching of Junior Medical Staff on their clinical team, including medical students. The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a role model for Junior Medical Staff in relation to professional conduct, clinical acumen and communication with patients, families and colleagues (including health professionals and other staff working in hospital and outpatient settings).

Advanced Trainees are appointed to one of the NSW Paediatric Training Networks (i.e. Western, Northern or Eastern), each of which is made up of a number of health facilities. As these are network positions, they involve training in a variety of locations and clinical departments. In order to comply with Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training program requirements, trainees may be required to work in accredited facilities (including private hospitals). Refer to attached documents for sites listed as being within the network. These facilities may be outside of NSW.
Advanced Trainees will be required to work normal hours, as appropriate for the particular clinical service allocated; this may include shift work. Trainees will also be required to work reasonable rostered overtime hours as required by the clinical service; this includes being available for patient handover and on-call duties in accordance with Public Health Medical Officers (State) Award. Advanced Trainees who accept these network positions must comply with the requirements of the training positions they are allocated to across the network, as outlined by the local statement of duties.
