Responsibilities

This position provides a unique opportunity to develop expertise in a range of public health areas, including communicable diseases, epidemiology, environmental health and immunisation.
The position may include one placement of at least six months’ duration in external locally-based organisations that will have a focus on health equity. Example of a placement arrangement may include 6-months in the PHU, followed by 6-months with the Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network or Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council. Medical officers may be placed elsewhere depending on availability of supervision and individual training requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the overall operational responsibilities of the Public Health Unit (PHU)
  • Providing public health medical advice and support on matters related CD outbreaks, including policy, protocols and processes.
  • Providing public health medical advice on other core operational areas, including environmental health, epidemiology, immunisation and infectious diseases.
  • Participating in a PHU after-hours on-call roster
  • Preparing reports and correspondence and undertaking data management on notifiable disease databases.
  • Liaising with PHU and Population Health staff, local clinicians and other agencies concerning other public health matters, as delegated by the Clinical Director.
  • Working towards obtaining competence, skills, and knowledge in public health medicine for the purposes of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine training program
