The General Medicine Advanced Trainee (AT) position at Blacktown Hospital offers comprehensive training opportunities in respiratory and sleep medicine. Trainees manage inpatient teams and conduct regular outpatient clinics, gaining exposure to a diverse range of conditions. They participate in procedures such as pleural ultrasound, chest tube insertion, and indwelling pleural catheters under consultant supervision. The hospital’s dedicated bronchoscopy room allows trainees to understand indications, preparation, and peri-procedural management of patients undergoing bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound. Additionally, trainees engage in practical pleural and non-invasive ventilation training sessions, as well as a cardiopulmonary exercise testing program. They report on complex lung function tests and participate in monthly review sessions. On-call duties and weekend ward rounds provide further opportunities to manage respiratory conditions. Trainees present clinical cases, quality improvement initiatives, journal club reviews, and audits, and are encouraged to complete a research project, with support leading to presentations at national and international meetings.
The Advanced Trainees in General Medicine provide expert medical care to inpatients and outpatients of the General Medicine departments. This position has been welcomed to address the increased demand for General Medicine expertise in Western Sydney. Terms will include 2 core terms of 6 months each in Acute General Medicine and Acute Respiratory Medicine. An alternate term can be arranged in Aged Care Medicine if preferred by the successful applicants. Other terms available from time to time may include Rehabilitation and Palliative and Supportive Medicine. Trainees practice under the supervision and direction of Specialist Medical Practitioners. Training will extend acute medicine skills and develop in a supportive, clinical setting with high exposure to complex, acute medical presentations.
The Advanced Trainee will participate in outpatient services in a variety of ambulatory care settings including hospital facilities and private consulting rooms. The role includes patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures and maintaining adequate medical records; and developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. This includes supervised general medical management of patients admitted to specialist departments.
Close and effective liaison with consultants will allow the doctor to demonstrate their level of ability and understanding of patient care and enable you to expand your areas of responsibility. All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
The Advanced Trainee in General Medicine is a key person who works closely with all members of staff and must:
