MINISTER FOR GOVERNMENT SERVICES

The office of ​Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher is seeking applications for a non-ongoing, full-time Adviser (for an initial period of six months with the possibility for further extension, and the possibility for the role to be made ongoing) based in Australian Parliament House in Canberra, ACT.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Adviser will provide high quality advice and support to the Minister relating to policy, public administration and political matters, particularly in relation to the Minister for Women portfolio.
The key duties of the position include but are not limited to:
· Work in a fast paced and dynamic environment, providing well-considered, strategic advice to the Minister for Women and supporting delivery of priority, complex and sensitive policy, public administration and political issues, particularly in relation to ending gender-based violence.
· Maintain effective relationships across government, including with other minister’s offices and the Australian Public Service on complex and sensitive policy priorities.
· Liaise with the Australian Public Service in relation to the preparation of policy, advice and legislation, and ensure that the resources of the portfolio department are effectively utilised to provide high level and appropriate advice and support to the Minister.
· Liaise closely with stakeholders to provide advice and support the Government’s priorities.
· Provide advice and support on parliamentary matters including Question Time, legislative processes and parliamentary business.
· Assist in developing policy initiatives, including through analysing and preparing reports, papers, policy statements, briefing notes and statistical information on policy and related matters and significant portfolio initiatives.
· Provide input into communications and political advice as required.
· Promote, support and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
· Interstate travel will be required for this role as directed, with occasional irregular work hours, particularly during parliamentary sitting weeks.
· Other duties as required to support the Parliamentarian and the effective operation of the Office.

THE IDEAL APPLICANT SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE:

· Demonstrated experience working to advance gender equality through policy/programming advice and/or implementation in a public, non-profit or private sector organisation. Experience addressing gender-based violence and related social policy issues, working politically, and working in public administration would be highly regarded.
· Strong understanding of government processes, including translating policy into practice. An understanding of the Australian Public Service/federal budget processes would be highly regarded.
· Excellent relationship management skills and proven ability to collaborate and work across stakeholders and portfolios to achieve outcomes, particularly through working with other Ministerial Offices, the Australian Public Service and community stakeholders.
· Demonstrated ability to think and work strategically as a part of a small team and deliver quality work in a high-pressure environment.
· Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
· A respectful demeanour when engaging with office staff and constituents.
