Job Summary Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts. Responsible for solving machine and part problems, maintains a high productivity rate and constantly strives to improve productivity.   Essential Functions:  1. Operate assigned machinery to fabricate parts to the required specifications by: * Reading work orders and specification sheets before starting the machine. * Properly powering up and down the machine. * Loading and unloading parts. * Ensuring proper tooling for each machine. * Changing vise jaws, collets in indexer, and other work holding devices * Removing and installing tools from tool magazines * Knowing different types of mills, drills and other tooling. * Adjust and operate numeric and computer numeric controlled machining centers.  2. Ensures all parts are to the required specifications by: * Maintaining and continuously improving the quality of parts produced. * Reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. * Verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications. * Complying with all work instructions. * Following and maintaining ISO/AS9100 and Schafer procedures. * Completing Schafer’s quality certification requirements for assigned area.  3. Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by: * Conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures. * Starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. * Installing replacement parts in machines and equipment and testing operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance. * Conferring with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems.  4. Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by: * Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines. * Measuring dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining. * Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools. * Reducing downtime of machines setups * Getting computer setup ready by preparing tooling, fixtures, steel, gages, etc * Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area.  5. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by: * Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution. * Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures. * Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed. * Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements. * Resolving problems. * Performing other job-related duties as required. * Helping evaluate job applicant’s knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring. * Passing along vital information for subsequent shifts. * Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines. * Assisting and/or training in other machine center cell areas as needed.    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities  1. Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 40 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.  1. Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take     messages in a legible, accurate manner.  1. Two-year certification from technical school and/or.  1. Two years of experience in set-ups and running of production.  1. Must be able to communicate in English.   1. Ability to use a computer.   Working Conditions:  1. Air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents.  1. This job is to be performed at the designated facility 100% of the time unless directed otherwise by manager/supervisor.
