JOB DESCRIPTION

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.
The Boeing Safety, Security, and Airworthiness (SS&A) organization is looking for Airplane Safety Engineers (Associate, Mid-Level, Senior) to join the Design Build Safety (DBS) team in Charleston, South Carolina. Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including Associate, Mid-Level, and Senior Airplane Safety Engineers.
Do you get energized by seeing our product get built and maintained? Are you passionate about product safety and eager to make a high-impact contribution to Boeing’s production and maintenance processes?
Join the newly formed Airplane Safety Team supporting the Enduring Design Build Safety (DBS) initiative, a key part of Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ (BCA) Safety and Quality Plan (SQP) following the Alaska Airlines 1282 incident. DBS is focused on eliminating or minimizing production and maintenance errors that can cause or contribute to failure conditions, ensuring the highest level of rigor and confidence in product safety.
As an Airplane Safety Engineer on the DBS team, you will have the opportunity to work independently while leading teams tasked to deliver urgent product safety solutions, mature robust processes, and help integrate Safety Management System (SMS) and Quality Management System (QMS) functions. This role offers high visibility and the opportunity to collaborate across design, manufacturing, and quality engineering discipline across the entire product life cycle. The importance of this function can’t be overstated as you will contribute to Boeing product safety through Safety Assurance of our build and maintenance activities.
Engagement with company leadership and functional experts from across the company make this position highly invigorating. We have a close-knit group with mentors available for consultation.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • 1+ years related work experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (DESIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • Mid-Level: 5+ years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Senior: 10+ years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Positive “can-do” attitude towards working cross functionally with DE/ME/QE/Ops on a system or structure they are not experts on
  • Experience as a Mechanical System Design and Analysis Engineer (6G/5B), Structures and Payloads Design Engineer (6G/5C), Structural Analysis Engineer (6G/5D), Electrical Design and Analysis Engineer (6B/1D), or Aerospace Systems Safety Engineer (6P/AS).
  • Strong working skills with Systems Safety Analyses (SSAs), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs), Common Mode Analysis (CMA), and/or structural failure modes.
  • MRB or Service engineering experience
  • Basic understanding of Boeing’s intranet architecture (REDARs, ASTRO, CMES, MyBoeingFleet)

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Required

Responsibilities
  • Lead safety analyses for Design Build Assessments (DBAs) on BCA production and maintenance programs, including:
  • Creating safety packages summarizing hazards from Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs), System Safety Assessments (SSAs), and in-service product safety events
  • Partnering with Design, Manufacturing, and Quality Engineering
  • Supporting Process Failure Modes Effect Analyses (PFMEA) and developing mitigations, controls, and barriers to prevent production and maintenance escapes
  • Presenting at Technical Design Reviews and serving as the authoritative expert on product safety documentation and containment actions
  • Support or Lead Safety Risk Management (SRM) activities related to DBS findings, including hazard identification, risk assessment, bow-tie development, and mitigation strategies
  • Strengthen SMS/QMS integration by advancing processes that:
  • Ensure appropriate SMS response to QMS signals
  • Assess process noncompliance for product safety risk
  • Identify production build issues with high safety severity or verification system failures
  • Evaluate potential systemic corrective actions beyond restoring the affected part
  • Mature solutions for data monitoring, systemic hazard escalation, enhanced controls, and design practices to ensure product conformance. We coordinate closely with Boeing functional groups, management and executives, and suppliers to ensure all stakeholders are aligned with proposed solutions.
  • Support updates to functional excellence (templates, trainings) based on findings
  • Partner cross-functionally to increase visibility of product safety sensitivity across the digital thread and drive improvements to Boeing Safety Intelligence
