Description The Athletic Director is responsible for the organizational leadership and daily oversight of the athletics program, ensuring continued alignment with the school’s strategic plan. This role requires a dedicated professional with a highly positive disposition who can balance complex administrative operations with a passion for mentoring athletes and leading staff. Reporting to the Middle School Division Head, this leader works closely with the Director of Auxiliary Programming and the Assistant Head of School. In addition, the Director maintains compliance with all regulations and fosters a positive environment that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence, and personal growth. Program Leadership & Operations Strategic Oversight: Guide and manage all Middle and Upper School athletic programs in alignment with Carroll’s HAWKS values and the school’s expansion. Scheduling & Logistics: Coordinate and input comprehensive schedules for games, practices, and transportation; manage the athletic sign-up process and coordinate with other Athletic Directors. Facility & Equipment Management: Oversee the maintenance and use of athletic facilities across three campuses, including game-day setup (e.g., scoreboards) and the procurement, maintenance, and storage of uniforms for all teams. Coaching: Coach all athletic seasons. Programming: Coordinate of Friday ASE programming along with non-athletic ASE programming Monday-Thursday (i.e. supervised study hall, art, bounders) Staff & Student-Athlete Development Mentorship: Recruit, hire, and train coaches across all school levels, providing ongoing professional development. Character & Sportsmanship: Foster an environment that prioritizes teamwork, confidence, and the "Spirit of Competition," ensuring coaches lead by example Student Success: Promote discipline, character development, and strong self-advocacy skills, ensuring that athletics serve as a platform for personal growth. Compliance, Safety & Finance Health & Safety: Implement safety protocols in coordination with school nurses; ensure all student medical records are current, and coaching staff maintain First Aid/CPR certification. Personnel & Pay: Hire and manage athletic trainers and referees for home games; provide accurate payroll data to the Business Office for coaching and extended-day staff. Budgetary Oversight: Manage the athletic department budget, ensuring the responsible and efficient use of funds. Regulatory Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to NEPSAC and league policies, including DEIB standards and the Code of Conduct. Communication & Community Engagement Family Relations: Act as the primary point of contact for families with high levels of customer service regarding schedules, policies, and program expectations. Representation: Serve as a leader within the NEPSAC community, upholding the standards of behavior for student-athletes, officials, and spectators. Expectations: Part-time position (0.6 FTE), Monday through Friday 12:30-5:30 pm (or until the last student gets picked up); benefits-eligible position. Requirements Qualifications Bachelor's degree in physical education; Master's preferred. 5+ years in athletic administration, teaching, and coaching, ideally in an independent school setting. Exceptional ability to navigate parent partnerships and build a collaborative team culture. Knowledge of current curricular and instructional practices. Knowledge of relevant technology applications. Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
