The MITRE Special Operations Department (N552) is seeking an experienced Artificial Intelligence Engineer to lead advanced data analysis and AI/ML initiatives for the Special Operations Forces (SOF) work program. N552 operates across a globally integrated team and partners closely with other MITRE departments supporting the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Headquarters, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the Service Component Special Operations Commands (SOCs), and the Theatre Special Operations Commands (TSOCs). We work with the SOF Community to deliver actionable solutions that reduce risk; enhance mission success; and ensure the safe return of operators.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a technical discipline such as Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Software, Cyber Security, Systems), Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or related fields and 8 years of related experience
  • Active Top Secret//SCI clearance.
  • Expertise in large-scale data analysis using Spark, Dask, and Hadoop.
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C/C++, and Java, with experience using Conda, NumPy, Scikit-Learn, Pandas, SciPy, NetworkX, Cython, Numba, Tensorflow, Pytorch, and SQL.
  • Demonstrated success leading capability development projects and transitioning operational prototypes to sponsors.
  • 5+ years hands-on experience with designing, building, and/or deploying prototype systems to DoD/IC sponsors.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters or Ph.D. in a technical discipline such as Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Software, Cyber Security, Systems), Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or related fields and 10 years of related experience.
  • Experience as a Project Lead for USG sponsors, including experience with internal business systems, property management procedures, and unique security constraints.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of the specialized mission needs and relevant technical solutions in highly constrained operational environments.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and closing capability gaps for DoD/IC sponsors.
  • Familiar with big data tools and techniques that contribute to the DVC (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Python, R, Matlab, and/or similar)
  • Proficiency in three or more of the following languages: Embedded C, C, Python, Assembly, Go, Ruby
Responsibilities

Qualified candidates will have a strong background in data science, machine learning, and a proven track record of developing innovative solutions for complex data problems. This role involves designing and implementing technical solutions, conducting research and development, and working directly with stakeholders to enhance operational success. The selected candidate will collaborate with the Special Operations Department leadership team and other technical teams within MITRE to develop tactical, operational, and strategic technological solutions for the DoD and Intelligence communities. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a federated MITRE team contributing to projects across MITRE’s National Security Engineering Center (NSEC), MITRE Labs, and other work programs. The selected candidate will also engage directly with military and civilian experts from SOF and other parts of the United States Government (USG) to address mission-critical mission challenges, deliver tailored solutions, and apply emerging technologies to operational needs. hands-on development experience, ranging from basic scripting to machine learning, while working across multiple mission spaces and partners.

Selected candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Domain/Technical Expertise. Proficiency in two or more of the following areas: (1) DoD Special Operations, (2) Machine Learning, (3) Artificial Intelligence, (4) Data Science, (5) Computer Vision. Ability to design, develop, and deploy technical solutions to address operational challenges.
  • Leadership and Execution. Build and maintain relationships with subject matter experts in legal, policy, intelligence, technical, and special operations domains. Work directly with SOF program teams to deliver technical solutions for specialized missions and sensitive activities. Coordinate efforts across related projects to maximize technical impact and operational value.
  • Communication and Teamwork. Lead and mentor technical teams to achieve mission objectives, while clearly articulating goals and impacts to stakeholders. Collaborate with engineers, planners, and specialists to deliver actionable solutions that address sponsor needs.
  • Sponsor Engagement. Engage directly with senior military leaders, engineers, and technical experts to understand mission needs and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Flexibility and Suitability. Be able to modify and alter course as the environment and sponsor priorities shift. Understand the power of reach-back and be an effective conduit to bring the talent forward to execute at the right time. Operate within SOF culture and sensitive activities boundary conditions.
