JOB OVERVIEW
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Ambulance Care Assistant to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in patient care, with experience in manual handling and driving.
JOB DESCRIPTION: AMBULANCE CARE ASSISTANT
As an Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA), you will work on the non-emergency side of the ambulance service. You will be transporting patients to and from hospitals, day centres, and homes for routine appointments and between NHS Trusts as required. You will be responsible for ensuring that they are supported and cared for appropriately during their journey and that any patients feeling unwell are provided with appropriate assistance.
Our patients are usually older adults or less abled people; however, you will work with people from all walks of life. This may include individuals with dementia and mental health issues, as they are often users of our services.
You will start each day at our Ambulance Station, although you may also work away on an adaptable shift pattern. You will be paired with a crew mate with whom you will be equally responsible for driving and patient care. You will be driving an ambulance specially designed with ramps and protective areas.
During your shift, you are responsible for your patient’s welfare, moving, handling, and driving safely throughout the journey, to ensure passenger comfort. You may also need to offer reassurance to anxious patients, gently explain situations to patients who are confused, and generally treat each person in a way that enables them to maintain their dignity and independence.
An ACA will often need to assist patients to stand from wheelchairs, carry up or down stairs, so you must be physically capable of doing these tasks. Manual handling techniques and the use of specialist equipment will be taught during the induction. ACAs have first aid and basic life-support skills; in case they need to use these while transporting patients.
You have the responsibility to check, clean and disinfect the ambulance and restock any used supplies. To help the patient keep their records up to date, you will need to fill in Patient Report Forms, transfer forms, as well as report all incidents & accidents.
