    The team
    The Financial Advice and Investment Management team is the team primarily responsible for ASIC’s role in relation to the regulation and supervision of the investment management and personal financial advice sectors. This includes proactive engagement and the monitoring of firms and the sector overall. The team also coordinates and provides strategic direction, industry knowledge and technical expertise for ASIC’s work in these sectors.
    This team is also responsible for the administration of the Financial Adviser Exam, and the registration of collective investment schemes.
    The team conducts analysis, research, proactive surveillance, supervision, monitoring, and engagement work (with a view to appropriate regulatory outcomes), considers applications for relief from legislative requirements, provides specialist support to regulatory reform activities, and actively engages with relevant stakeholders regularly to understand and respond to current and emerging industry issues. The team provides assistance to other teams within ASIC to enable them to carry out their roles, especially the carrying out of enforcement and compliance action.
    The role

Responsibilities:

  • Undertaking risk-based supervision projects in relation to the sector’s adherence with the law.
  • Participating in thematic reviews of harms or problems across the sectors and work as part of a team to develop appropriate solutions to regulatory issues.
  • Assisting with the identification and implementation of effective regulatory strategies and interventions to further appropriate consumer and market outcomes.
  • Coordinating the effective collection of information and data, analysing a range of qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Identifying new ways to utilise data to deliver priorities, including effective collection, management, analysis, and communication of insights from data.
  • Conducting analysis of data and other information to identify and measure regulatory harms, analyse, and determine the root cause of the harm, and assess the impact of the harm or potential harm.
  • Identifying potential areas for law reform and supporting the implementation of policy and law reform, including developing of new guidance, training, systems, and processes as required.
  • Consider applications for relief from the legislation administered by ASIC, review the submissions from the applicant (and third parties, as appropriate), consider existing policy and precedents, make a sound recommendation showing regulatory judgment and then prepare the relevant legal instrument to give effect to the relief decision.
  • Conducting assessments of products and services, and risks across the sectors.
  • Maintaining knowledge of ASIC’s regulatory framework and toolkit, relevant legislative and reporting requirements, domestic and international developments, and best industry practice models.
  • Deliver high quality advice on key issues and prepare clear and concise reports and discussion papers, including submissions to Commission, and written correspondence with external stakeholders, including government and industry bodies.
  • Contributing to and writing reports, presentations and briefings for senior management and external stakeholders
  • Supporting and participating in the planning and delivery of meetings with internal and external stakeholders to deliver better outcomes for consumers.
  • Working collaboratively with other teams within ASIC to enable them to carry out their roles, especially the carrying out of enforcement and compliance action.

Please note that roles are available at either ASIC4 or EL1 classification.

  • ASIC4 – from $87,259 + 15.4% superannuation: candidates with minimum 3-5 years’ relevant experience
  • EL1 – from $114,351 + 15.4% superannuation: candidates with minimum 5-6 years’ relevant experience.

About You

  • Relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Detailed knowledge of, or the ability to readily acquire knowledge of the financial advice and investment management sectors and the key issues influencing the sectors. Strong understanding of ASIC’s regulatory environment.
  • Experience assessing, challenging, and authenticating complex information, and making sound (regulatory) judgements.
  • A strong understanding of analysing quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting information to different audiences through strong business writing and verbal communication.
  • Draft clear, accurate analysis and advice on complex matters, including products, practices, and policy as relevant to financial services and ASIC’s regulatory environment.
  • Strategic thinking, analytical, investigative and research skills, including data analysis and presentation.
  • An understanding of the benefits in developing strategic relationships that partner to ensure the effective use of all available data and information opportunities.
  • Experience assessing, verifying and challenging complex information, and making sound regulatory judgements.
  • Ability to understand priorities and adjust work schedule to meet deadlines and ensure the delivery of effective and timely outcomes.
  • Strong writing and editing skills including the ability to distil key messages.
  • Ability to work through challenging, ambiguous, and complex issues calmly and logically.
