Job Title: Analytical Chemist Department: Laboratories for the Environment, Agriculture and Food (LEAF) Grade: 9 Basic Functions: Assists in performing advanced chemical, physical, and bacteriological testing on various environmental samples (e.g., water, soil, food, wastewater) following established procedures. Supports method development, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting. Contributes to administrative and supervisory tasks while upholding the mission and vision of the American University of Beirut and the Department.   1.     Duties Performed: Equipment & Supplies Management: 1. Conducts scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance and calibration on a range of analytical instruments, including gas/liquid chromatography, spectrophotometry, incubators, balances, ovens, and other general-purpose lab equipment. 2. Troubleshoots and resolves equipment malfunctions to ensure minimal downtime and real-time availability. 3. Maintains records for equipment calibration, repairs, and preventive/corrective maintenance; ensures adherence to safety and traceability standards. 4. Evaluates and provides feedback on new laboratory supplies and equipment; manages procurement, inventory updates, and proper storage of reagents and consumables. 5. Assists in waste disposal in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.   Testing & Analytical Operations: 1. Performs and supports high-complexity analytical testing on various sample matrices (biological, food, environmental) using validated methods. 2. Troubleshoots analytical procedures and instrumentation; identifies and resolves issues affecting test quality. 3. Supports method development, validation, and continuous improvement for efficiency and cost-effectiveness. 4. Assists in QA/QC processes, including data verification, results reporting, and compliance with lab protocols and accreditation standards. 5. Trains and supervises junior staff; reviews work and ensures adherence to quality and procedural standards. 6. Participates in research studies and performs competency and proficiency testing.     Administrative & Quality Assurance Duties: 1. Verifies receipt of supplies/equipment; inspects for quality and accuracy against specifications. 2. Monitors reagent and supply usage; supports cost analysis and test pricing reviews. 3. Updates and maintains SOPs and lab documentation; participates in audits and accreditation compliance activities. 4. Supports scheduling, workflow management, and team coordination in daily lab operations. 5. Participates in meetings, committees, and improvement projects focused on lab quality and performance.   Client & Sample Information Management: 1. Handles sample reception, data entry, and documentation using LIMS. 2. Ensures proper labeling, tracking, preservation, and storage of client samples. 3. Provides guidance to clients and researchers on sample collection and preservation best practices. 4. Prepares quotations and maintains professional communication regarding test planning and result discussions. 5. Performs other related duties as requested.   2.      Work Contacts: Regular contact with lab technicians, lab supervisor, junior staff. Occasional contact with researchers when needed.   3.      Independence of Operation:       Reports to 1st Level: Lab Technical Supervisor      2nd Level: LEAF Business Development Manager      Works according to established procedures and specialized technical standards. Completed work is spot        checked by the supervisor.   4.      Supervisory Responsibility:       Trains junior staff.   5.      Physical Effort: Moderate physical effort involves walking, standing, bending and the setting up and operation of equipment.   6.      Work Conditions:      Works in a standard laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemical and other laboratory hazards.   7.      Minimum Requirements: 1. Bachelor's Degree of Science in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science or Biology. 2. 1 year experience in Analytical Chemistry.  3. Good knowledge of English and Arabic, French is a plus. 4. Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications, as well as working knowledge of statistical data handling is helpful. 5. Strong organizational and documentation skills. 6. Basic understanding and Knowledge of: * Laboratory Analytical Techniques (titration, pH, spectrophotometry). * Basics of instrumental analysis (HPLC, GC, UV-Vis) spectrophotometer). * Quality control concepts * Good laboratory practices and laboratory safety, including hazardous chemical handling and hazardous waste segregation. * Sample custody, preservation, storage, and ultimate disposal protocols. * Basic statistical techniques.
