MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having held a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Missouri for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Build and maintain tactful, effective/positive working relationship with co-workers, other city employees, and the public.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, city staff, court personnel and members of the public
  • Foster and contribute to a work environment that supports and exhibits honesty, diversity, integrity, trust and respect.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.

Responsibilities
  • Cleans and maintains dog kennels, cat cages, lobby, and office areas daily.
  • Follows up on all calls and complaints regarding stray animals, animal welfare, animal bites, lost pets, barking, city licenses, wildlife conflicts, and injured and dead animals.
  • Patrols the city limits looking for strays and enforcing city ordinances.
  • Opens the shelter for adoptions; counsels’ visitors about the appropriate pet for their family; processes adoption applications, collects fees, and schedules vet visits.
  • Impounds all strays; vaccinates animals; enters the animal’s information into the computer; prints out animal receiving receipts and kennel cards.
  • Provides health care, food, water, and exercise for all animals at the shelter.
  • Maintains incinerator, including changing the recording chart weekly, operating the incinerator, and cleaning out the incinerator.
  • Issues citations and subpoenas; appears in court monthly for residents neglecting to follow city ordinances.
  • Follows through with animal bites, including reports, evaluations, and quarantine of the animal.
  • Enters all complaints and fieldwork into the computer.
  • Serves on-call on the evenings of scheduled work days.
  • Assists city residents in trapping wildlife.
  • Attempts to locate the owners of stray animals brought into the shelter.
  • Assists in euthanizing animals.
  • Transports dogs and cats to the vet for neutering and spaying, health issues, and euthanasia.
  • Picks up injured or dead wildlife and disposes of properly.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
