Help Lakeshore build the best team to serve the residents of Lakeshore! Position: Poundkeeper Salary: Grade 4, Non Union $23.78/hr Classification: Non Union Reports to: Division Leader – By Law Purpose of Position: Reporting to the Division Leader – By Law. The Poundkeeper is responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the dog pound and to work with Animal Control to promote responsible pet ownership. Education & Experience: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Minimum 1 year related experience with animal handling, animal behavior and animal care. Knowledge & Skills: Thorough knowledge of related municipal by-laws. Thorough knowledge of Pounds Act, Dog Owner’s Liability Act, Animals for Research Act. Major Responsibilities: Receive animals; Check for identifying tag, tattoo, microchip, or injuries. Contact owner, veterinarian office, St. Clair College Veterinary Program and/or Windsor Humane Society. Feed, water, and care for dogs. Maintenance of dog control records. Daily cleaning and maintenance of dog pens/runs, etc. Coordinate release of dogs in accordance with agreement in place with outside agencies. With supervisor’s direction, coordinate euthanization of animals that are critically injured, diseased or pose health risk, or have been held for the minimum redemption period. Exercise animals when all other responsibilities are complete. Ensure an identification checklist is completed for suspected banned breeds, photographs are taken, and proper paperwork is received from owner if dog is being claimed. Adhere to the Dog Owners Liability Act regarding banned breed dogs. Perform other duties as assigned. Decision Making and Judgment: Work is performed under the general direction of the Division Leader. Decision making limited to exercising of animals, release of animals, and coordination of euthanization. Financial Resources: Charge appropriate fees for redemption and dog tags in accordance with the municipality’s fee structure. Physical Skill and Effort: Must be in good overall health, otherwise no special physical skills required. Communication: Internal Daily contact with Animal Control Officer(s) appointed by various municipalities. External Contact with Veterinarian Clinics, St. Clair College Staff, and general public. Work Conditions – Environment: Schedule varies between weekday and weekend work; open 7 days per week. Noise level is moderate to occasionally loud. Both indoor and outdoor work responsibilities. Exposure to cleaning products and animal biosolids. Subject to adverse behavior when communicating with the general public. Control over Work Schedule: Occasionally requested to work beyond normal office hours subject to the employee’s consent in order to mee deadlines.
