REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

• Minimum 3 years of experience working with animals in biomedical research, of which 1 year must be with non-human primates. Veterinary Hospital technical experience will be considered.
• Must be proficient in routine veterinary, technical, and husbandry techniques.
• Proficient in animal health surveillance monitoring.
• Experience in ABSL–3 or ABSL-4 laboratories.
• Be able to don and doff the required Personal Protective Equipment.
• Possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and standard procedures.
• Proficient with advanced skills using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Ability to prioritize and handle multiple demands, often under tight time constraints
• Effectively work with peers, leadership, and stakeholders in a productive collaborative environment.
• Ability to understand and comply with confidentiality and privacy rules and protect company property and confidential information.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

• High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.
• BS degree in Animal Science, Biology, or similar discipline, or A.A. in Veterinary Technology is preferred.
• LVT/CVT licensure/certification preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to lift up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms) frequently.
• Strength and agility to capture, restrain, and carry medium-sized mammals without causing harm to the animal or self.
• Must have no known allergies to animals, feed, or chemicals
• Walking, reaching, bending, and stooping.
• May be exposed to Hazardous materials and will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against exposure to pathogens and chemicals.
• Ability to obtain necessary immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to laboratory placement, including Hepatitis B, among others.
• Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing may be required.
• Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an Animal Health Technician II to assist veterinarians and researchers with laboratory animal care, treatments, procedures, and enrichment activities to ensure their health and welfare within the public health sector for our federal customer.
This position will involve various veterinary procedures, including dental, radiological, surgical, blood collection, and/or substance administration while practicing infection control. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with various species of animals and contribute to maintaining the highest standards in animal welfare practices.
This is an entirely onsite position at our customer’s location in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is contingent on contract award.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support veterinarians, animal care staff, and researchers in delivering animal care, conducting technical procedures, administering treatments, and performing diagnostic and preventive measures.
• Maintain medical records and inventory.
• Provide surgical and non-surgical technical support and/or specialized procedures as needed.
• Handle and restrain animals.
• Provide basic assistance to the animals through first aid, administer medication, and administer inoculations.
• Make recommendations to the attending Vet, Research Staff, and technicians regarding animal care and facility operations.
• Prepare and distribute animal diets, enrichment, and treatments; record physiological data.
• Perform technical procedures including blood collection, catheterization, anesthesia, tissue sampling, drug administration, inoculations, and disease testing.
• Apply basic animal behavior knowledge for training and cognitive testing; assist with behavioral studies and data collection.
• Conduct health surveillance and report abnormalities.
• Maintain electronic medical records and communicate clinical updates to veterinary staff and clients.
• Collect and process biological samples (blood, urine, stool, tissue).
• Assist with necropsies and tissue harvesting for studies.
• Perform routine health checks across the animal colony.
• Clean and sanitize prep and procedure areas; set up supplies and equipment.
• Organize and manage sample inventory in freezers.
• Complete required training on animal care, technical procedures, safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Providing mentorship, training, and guidance for less experienced staff.
• Support ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 laboratory operations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
