Marina Pajic heads an innovative multidisciplinary personalised medicine for pancreatic cancer research program. Her research builds on and goes beyond our knowledge of the genetics of cancer, to better understand how the surrounding tumour environment controls and drives the aggressive nature of this disease, metastasis of the cancer, and resistance to treatment. With this new insight, her team is developing novel, tailored therapeutic interventions, whereby cancers are selected for optimal treatment based on their overall molecular “fingerprint”. We study human disease using advanced molecular and cellular biology, immunology & imaging methodologies. THE OPPORTUNITY The primary function of the Animal Research Assistant is to provide for the care and maintenance of animals used in medical research projects directly related to the Pajic Lab, within the Garvan’s Biological Testing Facility (BTF). This position adds significant value by providing animal care services, thereby freeing research staff to focus on research outcomes. High level of interaction with researchers and students within the Pajic Lab and within the Cancer Ecosystems Program is expected and essential. Effective and breakthrough scientific outcomes ultimately result in further funding success for Garvan's ultimate goal in prevention and treatment of disease. This includes undertaking regular measurements of treatment effects in our models and data entry associated with measurements of treatment response, breeding records and maintenance of the Stuart Database Successfully complete several research projects in an efficient and timely manner, with regard to key therapeutic intervention studies aimed at developing new treatment options for cancer, including providing data for the preparation of publications and research proposal submissions to external funding bodies. Ensuring animals have food and water at all times Daily monitoring of animals and reporting health or behavioural abnormalities to more senior staff and team members Adhere to Garvan’s Animal Ethics Monitoring Standards and maintain up to date skills and knowledge of ethical, monitoring policies, protocols and checklists as per lab’s approved animal research authorities Actively communicate with and support ABR/BTF team members in order to maintain the welfare and ethical monitoring standards of the animals in your care Maintain up to date skills and knowledge of ethical, monitoring policies, protocols and checklists Weighing and administering medication to animals as per our research projects, when requested by senior staff of the Personalised Cancer Therapeutics lab including dilutions of drugs and chemicals Basic manipulation techniques - injections, bleeding techniques, euthanasia, post mortems, administration of anaesthesia, post mortems and tissue harvesting Basic Surgical Techniques - Xenografting (Subcutaneous and orthotopic (intra-pancreatic and intrasplenic) surgeries) and passaging of tumours Administrative responsibilities: animal arrivals, monitoring sheets, contribution to data analysis Attend and proactively participate in team meetings Participate in ongoing professional development and training Be available to participate in shifts and work rosters covering weekends and public holidays ABOUT YOU Key qualities for success: Relevant TAFE or university qualifications (Honours) in animal technology/research or equivalent are required Possess a strong commitment to animal welfare and care Experience in handling rodents Basic knowledge of the husbandry, housing and breeding requirements of lab animals, including familiarity with the NHMRC “Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes” Possess basic manipulation skills (i.e. injection technique, euthanasia) Excellent attention to detail and observational skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Reliability, patience and must be trustworthy The ability to work individually or as a member of a group Ability to organise own time - be able to schedule tasks using a work diary A professional and caring approach Ability and motivation to develop new skills and learn new procedures ABOUT GARVAN Garvan Institute of Medical Research is an independent Medical Research Institute (MRI) in Sydney, delivering scientific and clinical impact on a global basis and in partnership with organisations that share our vision.
