Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society (VDICSS) is seeking an Anti-Racism Community Outreach Worker.
This is a full-time term position, 35 hours/week for 40 weeks, at $24.00-$26.00 per hour (based on experience and qualifications), with the possibility of extension depending on funding.

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

• Lived experience as an immigrant
• Experience working with youth (ages 15-19)
• Fluency in a language other than English
• Relevant work experience
• Strong administrative skills
• Post-secondary course work in social justice and equity studies, sociology, anthropology, race relation studies, or other related area, or a combination of relevant experience and education.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

• Strengthening community connections, employment services for youth, and settlement work in schools, addressing specific forms of discrimination, and creating a more just, equitable and inclusive community.
• Emphasizing a proactive, preventive, and responsive approach to empowering individuals and groups, promoting awareness and understanding about racism, and helping dismantle systemic racism.
• Leveraging VDICSS’s resources and local partnerships in a highly effective way to deliver services in five key areas: mental health, resilience building, anti-hate and diversity initiatives, empowerment, and local capacity building.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:

• Providing strong, reliable, community-informed support for the provincial anti-racism helpline for racialized people who have experienced racism and providing timely and seamless access and referrals to reliable community resources.
• Collaborating with the VDICSS Settlement Worker in Schools team on work with newcomer youth, including educational initiatives aimed at empowering individuals and groups, promoting awareness and understanding about racism, and dismantling systemic racism.
• Working with the Community Connections team to help newcomers build support networks, gain familiarity with local culture and services, and participate in community life through various activities, workshops, and small group events.
• Working with the Community Connections team to organize and host community-wide events to promote cultural understanding, reduce stigma, and foster a more just, diverse, and inclusive culture.
• Creating and facilitating workshops, activities, and resources for targeted groups on topics that enhance their ability to cope with discrimination, stress, and adversity.
• Collaborating with local partners to provide and promote activities that build resilience, including activities focusing on creative expression.
• Collaborating with local agencies to promote mental health for clients experiencing racism and ensuring timely and seamless referrals for counselling.
• Identifying existing local infrastructure and potential partnerships and providing support as needed.
• Building individual, group, and community capacity to help people cope, heal, and support others who have been directly impacted by racism and discrimination.
