Reporting to the Construction Supervisor, the Apprentice/Journeyman Electrician plays a critical role in performing on-site construction activities, either independently or as part of a small, dedicated workgroup. This role involves executing tasks within a substation environment, ensuring all construction activities are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with project standards.
The Apprentice/Journeyman Electrician is responsible for identifying potential changes or field issues as they arise, promptly bringing them to the attention of the Foreman. Additionally, the Electrician collaborates with the Foreman to establish work timelines, provide updates on progress, and notify when work fronts are completed. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, and effective communication to support successful project execution.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in the construction industry, with a focus on electrical and utility projects.
- Certified as a Power System Electrician (PSE), Journeyperson Electrician, or Lineman.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is mandatory.
- Experience in medium to high-voltage substation construction and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is considered an asset.
- Proven ability to manage small workgroups safely and efficiently while maintaining project timelines.
- Strong knowledge of construction disciplines, safety regulations, and quality control practices.
- Field-based position requiring flexibility to accommodate multiple shifts based on project schedules and contractual requirements.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and construction plans, including those related to BESS and substation systems.
- Understanding of SCADA systems and their integration within substation and BESS environments.
- Familiarity with basic Electrical, Bus, and Grounding (EB&G) principles and their practical application.
- Comprehensive understanding of safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices, including lockout/tagout protocols and limits of approach.
- Skilled in using, maintaining, and inspecting tools appropriately to ensure safe and effective operation.
- Proficiency in substation and BESS-specific tasks, including steel erection, cable tray building, cable trenching, bus work, high-voltage equipment installation, and steel structure assembly.
- Experienced in pulling, glanding, and terminating cables efficiently and accurately.
- Ability to identify and document quality deficiencies, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
- Perform and lead daily tailboard safety discussions and hazard assessments.
- Identify workplace hazards and implement effective preventive and mitigative controls.
- Contribute to the review and improvement of Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enhance safety and efficiency in both substation and BESS construction environments.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- College Diploma/undergraduate Degree
- In Ontario, must complete 3 terms of school and 9000 hours.
- Have to pass the Red Seal examination (Every province except Alberta).
- In Alberta – must have the Journeyman ticket.
- Certified in PSE/Electrician/Lineman designation required.
- 3-5 Years of Industry Experience
- An acceptable combination of education and experience to fulfil the role.
