We are seeking a versatile and skilled candidate who is looking to become, or is a registered apprentice Millwright, to join our dynamic team. As an apprentice Millwright under the guidance of a Journeyman Millwright at Rail Shop Services, you will be responsible for servicing, maintaining and installing a wide range of mechanical equipment including, but not limited to, pneumatics, hydraulics, piping systems, pumps, and HVAC systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with mechanical systems and at least 1 year of manufacturing, maintenance, or fabrication. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong commitment to a safety culture will set the candidate apart.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently a registered 1st or 2nd year millwright apprentice, or willing to become a registered apprentice.
  • 1 year of hands-on experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical systems or equipment
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.
  • Commitment to safety culture.
  • Willing and able to travel within Canada, USA, and Mexico (possess a valid passport, Class 5 operator’s license and reliable vehicle).
  • Fluency in Spanish or French would be an asset.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • A background check is required.
  • Once the applicant proceeds to an apprenticeship, they are expected to provide their own hand tools.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the fabrication of custom equipment, which can range from outfitting a sea container with insulation, pumps, piping, and HVAC equipment, to prototype equipment fabrication, testing and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance tasks to ensure the reliability and longevity of machinery and equipment in rail and municipal infrastructure settings.
  • Assist in the installation, calibration, and repair of mechanical systems and components for automation and facility operations.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in mechanical technology relevant to the rail and municipal infrastructure sectors.
  • Completing daily safety meetings and hazard assessments prior to starting work.
  • Safely operate and maintain tools and other equipment required for repair and installation tasks
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals under the guidance of experienced tradespeople.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and parts used.
  • Safe and proper use of yard equipment (Loader/forklift, with training provided).
  • Collaborate with and support other trades to ensure seamless integration and completion of projects.
  • Approximately 30% of work will be site work, the remainder will be working in the Edmonton shop, Monday to Friday, usually 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Site work may require weekend work and travel and may require extended site presence for up to two weeks at a time.
