Description

An apprentice toolmaker is a trainee who is learning how to create, repair, and maintain precision tools, molds, dies, and special guiding or holding devices used in manufacturing. Working under the supervision of experienced toolmakers, the apprentice gains hands-on experience and technical knowledge related to machining, engineering drawings, material properties, and computer-aided design (CAD) or manufacturing (CAM).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the fabrication of precision tools using machines like lathes, milling machines, grinders, and CNC equipment
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints
  • Learning to use measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, gauges) to ensure tools meet exact specifications
  • Performing repairs and maintenance on tools and dies
  • Supporting with quality control and testing of finished tools
  • Following health and safety regulations in a workshop or factory setting
