Our Opportunity   Fortescue is pleased to open applications for the 2027 Mechanical Fitter - Hedland Residential Apprenticeship intake.   We are looking for motivated and mechanically minded individuals who possess a passion for learning.   This is a great opportunity to enter a highly sought after vocation, engage in training, and gain invaluable experience with a world class iron ore producer and global greens solutions business. As well as being a part of the Fortescue Family, the successful applicants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to help them succeed and become a highly skilled and capable tradesperson.    Work Location: Fortescue’s Hedland Operations    Rosters: (8:6:7:7) OR 8D6R (8:6) Residential in Port Hedland   ***PLEASE NOTE - You must be a current Port or South Hedland resident to be eligible to apply!   About the Program   4-year apprenticeship offered, Hedland Residential Formal on-the-job training provided via coordinated rotations across Hedland operations Formal off-the-job training through North Metro Tafe WA  Completion of nationally recognised MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade Remuneration is above the award rate, and will reflect the working roster, work requirements, and training component of the program    About You   Must be 18 years or older at the commencement of the apprenticeship program (early Feb 2027) Hold a full valid Australian drivers licence Must have a passion for mechanical type work and problem solving Comfortable working in a physical and challenging environment The ability to work long hours, including night shift on coordinated roster rotations Completion of a Pre-Apprenticeship (Certificate II in Engineering - Mechanical Fitter and Machinist) and/or other studies that support the pathway (not essential but highly regarded) Previous exposure to operational mining and/or mechanical work experience (not essential but highly regarded)   Our Process - IMPORTANT INFORMATION   Step One:  Submit your application - be sure to answer all the questions and provide as much information as possible. Please attach the below to your application:   Current resume listing your relevant work experience to date Cover letter describing yourself and motivation for applying Copies of all supporting documentation such relevant certifications and/or qualifications   The quality of your application is part of the initial shortlisting criteria!   Step Two: If your application is shortlisted and progressed to the next stage, you will be contacted and invited to attend an Assessment Centre which will consist of the below activities:   Speed Interviews Group Activity Information Session Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment.   Assessment Centre Date - Tuesday 8th September 2026   You must attend the Assessment Centre in person to be considered for a position. If you are rostered on shift, please speak to your leader.   Step Three: Applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of October 2026. Successful external applicants will be required to complete pre-employment checks and onboarding.     Start dates are scheduled for early February 2027. 
Responsibilities
Complete a 4-year apprenticeship involving formal on-the-job training across Hedland operations and off-the-job training via North Metro Tafe WA. The goal is to become a highly skilled tradesperson by obtaining a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade.
