POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Aquatics Manager resides in the Office of Health & Wellness within the division of Academics of the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Director of Physical Education. The Office of Health and Wellness (OHW) is comprised of the following programs: Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Instruction, Health Education, Physical Education, Physical Activity, and Wellness Policy, Evaluation & Promotions. OHW works across departments to provide an array of interdisciplinary services and supports to Boston Public Schools including: professional development, tiered instructional coaching, assessment & data management, program evaluation support, resource development and selection. Target areas include technical assistance/implementation, marketing & communications, family engagement, and community partnership brokering & development.
The Aquatics Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of the district’s aquatics programs, with a particular focus on program and course development for swim education. In addition, this position will manage the professional development and certifications of swim teachers, swim paras, and lifeguards to ensure high-quality instruction and student engagement in aquatic activities. The role combines program development, on-site coaching and support, and program administration to promote safe, effective, and inclusive swim education across the district. This position offers a dynamic opportunity for an individual passionate about aquatics education. QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Current certification in water safety instruction and lifeguard training. The lifeguard certification includes Lifeguard Skills, First Aid, and CPR/AED. These certifications must be renewed every two years.
  • Minimum of 5 years of combined experience working in an aquatics environment, with at least 3 of those years spent in aquatics program development and/or management.
  • Proven experience in providing professional development or coaching for physical education or swim instructors.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in aquatic education, swim instruction, and water safety.
  • Ability to build relationships with a diverse group of students, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple programs and initiatives simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire staff.
  • Knowledge of state and national educational standards for physical education and aquatics.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
  • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.
