Overview:
Are you passionate about cultural resources and eager to make a tangible impact? Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a dynamic part-time, as needed Archaeological Crew Chief to assist with cultural resource field surveys out of our Arizona office. Overnight travel may be required.
The Archeological Crew Chief is responsible to lead a crew of 1-3 other archaeologists through the field survey portion of a project. This role is responsible for ensuring that the crew is prepared for the day including tasks such as required equipment, daily safety briefing or log has been addressed, team members are working at the appropriate pace, answers questions, and resolve issues while in the field. This role is responsible for communicating key information back to the Principal Investigator or Project Manager daily. This position ensures the return of all staff and personnel back to the office or lodging at the end of each field day. This person is also responsible for data QA/QC of all team member documentation and data at the end of each day.

Responsibilities:

  • Applies established methodologies and procedures to perform assigned tasks.
  • Exhibit increased experience and/or mastery over the same skill-set as an archaeological technician.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage the daily tasks and schedule of 1-3 other individual crew members throughout the field effort of a project.
  • QA/QC all daily data for all crew members and report progress and/or any issues to Field Director or Principal Investigator.
  • Conduct daily safety tailgate meetings.
  • Pre-plan upcoming survey days and adjust schedule as needed due to access issues, weather, and/or direction from Principal Investigator.
  • Lead site delineations, divide tasks in this setting to utilize crew to maximum efficiency.
  • Coordinate communication and correspondence with ROW/Land agents and implement any access restrictions with crew as directed.
  • Ensure crew has ample functioning field equipment, notify Field Director to replenish when needed.
  • Ensure company or rental vehicle is secure and maintained during the field effort and notify the field director if issues occur or service is needed.
  • Ensure all GPS units are maintained and accounted for daily.
  • Troubleshoot any GPS issues with GIS team, Field Director, Project Manager, or vendor as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or other related field. Field school preferred but not required.
  • 3-6 years field experience preferred.
  • Demonstrate general computer skills, knowledge, and acumen (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to use technology such as laptop, tablet & smart phone.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively work as part of a team (i.e. collaborate, contribute, respect others).
  • Advanced knowledge of surveying practices and equipment.
  • Become familiar with reading plans and specifications. Become familiar with industry practices and materials for fieldwork.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Word.
  • Have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
