About the role
Cambridgeshire is facing significant pressures on land use from development, not only from housing and other development but increasingly so from Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs). These are major schemes that are agreed by central government yet the county council has a major role in helping to deliver these on the ground.
These present a challenge for the Historic Environment Team (HET) as we are involved from the initial planning and options through to overseeing programmes of intrusive and non-intrusive fieldwork, then detailed schemes of post-excavation, publication and archiving. A recent example would be the upgrade of the A14 which involved over 40 separate excavations along its length and is now in the process of being deposited, six years later.
Upcoming NSIPs include East West Rail, the Fens Reservoir, a Waste Water Treatment Works, an Energy from Waste facility and several very large solar and windfarms. We have received funding from central government to increase our officer resource to help our existing team meet the challenge.
The council is determined to deliver on our ambitions to manage and improve Cambridgeshire’s environment, ensuring that development pressures deliver the benefits from the historic environment as a part of these schemes.
What will you be doing?
The primary responsibility of the role will be supporting the delivery of archaeological development control functions with a focus on NSIPs, especially East West Rail. You will be reporting to the Archaeology Planning Manager and supporting our existing team.
We are looking for individuals with a good understanding and experience of British archaeology, especially intrusive and non-intrusive fieldwork. You must have a good level of computer literacy, ideally with knowledge and experience of GIS and/or databases. You must be able to work under your own initiative and pay close attention to detail.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join one of the largest archaeological teams in the country with great archaeological sites and a willingness to manage them.

To be successful in this role we are looking for someone who has:

• A good understanding and experience of British archaeology.
• A good understanding of current legislation and guidance on archaeology.
• Ability to monitor site operations unsupervised and in a safe manner, or specifying and monitoring archaeological fieldwork.
• A methodical approach to problem solving and record keeping.
• Is confident in working with local communities, having excellent communication skills and confident engaging with various audiences.
• Is pro-active and shows initiative to develop new ideas.
• Can manage workload effectively to meet strict deadlines while being a part of a dynamic and busy team.
• Is computer literate with experience of databases and GIS systems.
• An awareness of the wider issues impacting the historic environment sector and willingness to contribute to ongoing developments and debates.
