Paracel Laboratories Ltd. is a full-service environmental and Indoor Air Quality laboratory. Our main laboratory facilities are located in Ottawa and are supported by an environmental lab in Hamilton and microbiology and an asbestos laboratory in Mississauga and Calgary. Additional service depots are located in Kingston, London, Niagara, Windsor, and Richmond Hill. We support a broad spectrum of projects for professional clients from across Canada and around the world. Our client base primarily consists of major environmental consultants, all levels of government and industrial manufacturers located predominantly in Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara, Eastern and Southwestern Ontario.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Paracel Laboratories is looking for an Asbestos Analyst to join our team in Mississauga/Ottawa(West). The ideal candidate for this role is detail-oriented, dexterous and driven to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for asbestos by using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and/or phase contrast microscopy (PCM). They will be under the direct supervision of the Department Supervisor. This is a full-time, permanent position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicant must be able to distinguish colors to perform analysis.
  • College Diploma or other suitable Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Biotechnology, Geology or Biology would be an asset).
  • Must have at least 2+ years of experience (asbestos characterization by polarized light microscopy and/or phase contrast microscopy), in a production laboratory is desired.
  • Superb attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to effectively follow/interpret work instructions, methods and procedures.
  • High degree of manual dexterity.
  • Highly reliable and deadline-driven.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC) and ISO 17025.
  • Understanding of good laboratory practices.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Proven computer skills, including MS office.

Responsibilities
  • Preparation, detection, identification, and quantification of materials for the presence of asbestos content using visual estimation percentage and properties of asbestos and non asbestos material by PLM.
  • Preparation and analysis of asbestos air samples by PCM.
  • Use computers to manage workflow and data entry.
  • Coordinate sample analyses and data review of all incoming samples based on priority and turn around times.
  • Extended periods of microscope work.
  • Maintaining the QA/QC Program and following Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Assist in daily laboratory operations, including maintenance, calibration, stocking and cleaning.
  • Extended workdays and weekends may occasionally be required.
