The Aboriginal Supported Child Development (ASCD) Consultant plays a vital role in supporting children aged 0–19 with developmental delays or disabilities, helping them grow, thrive, and participate fully within their childcare settings and community. This role is more than developmental support. It is about walking alongside families, nurturing inclusive learning environments, strengthening early childhood systems, and ensuring that every child experiences safety, dignity, connection, and Snew̓íyelh (guidance through teachings). You will work holistically, honouring culture, language, identity, and the unique strengths of each child. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Provide family-centred services for children with extra support needs (physical, cognitive, social/emotional, communicative, or behavioral). * Conduct developmental screenings, assessments, and determine levels of support. * Create culturally grounded Individual Service Plans and implement inclusion strategies tailored to each child. * Collaborate with childcare programs to ensure children with diverse needs can participate fully and safely. * Model social interaction and inclusive play. * Plan daily activities and experiences that align with each child’s goals and Squamish cultural teachings. * Provide consultation, training, and ongoing communication with parents/caregivers. * Facilitate workshops and support parents through developmental concerns, planning, and community navigation. * Maintain strong relationships with child development professionals, Early Intervention team members, and community partners. * Coordinate services and referrals to ensure wraparound support for each child and family. * Promote program awareness, represent Ayás Mén̓men in the community, and contribute to broader program goals. * Document progress, maintain case files, and report effectively through database and tracking systems. * Uphold trauma-informed, family-centred, and culturally safe practice in all interactions. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR * Early Childhood Educator Certificate with Post-Basic Special Needs certification; OR BA in Early Childhood Development, Child & Youth Care, Psychology, Education, Social Work, or related field. * Experience working with children with developmental delays or disabilities. * Experience in inclusive childcare settings and direct early intervention work. * Skilled in communicating complex developmental information clearly and compassionately. * Ability to build trusting relationships with families, children, and colleagues. * Strong time-management and organizational abilities. * Able to work independently and within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team. * Grounded understanding of trauma-informed, family-centred, and inclusive practice. * Strong cultural safety lens when working with Indigenous children and families. * Cultural humility and respect for Sḵwx̱wú7mesh values, sovereignty, and self-determination.
