THE OPPORTUNITY:

Tetra Tech is adding an Asphalt Technologist to our Materials and Construction Services team based in Calgary, AB.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Techology or related field is preferred.
  • CCIL Asphalt Certification is an asset but not required at hiring. Candidates must be willing and able to get certified within 3 months of hire date.
  • Experience with Alberta and Western Canadian asphalt specifications and procedures is an asset. (including Alberta Transportation, City of Calgary, BC Ministry, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Strong computer skills, especially Word and Excel.
  • Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Some travel will be required in this position. Candidates must be prepared to undertake field assignments. Must be physically capable of performing the required field duties.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada without sponsorship
Responsibilities
  • Asphalt Material Testing: Perform daily testing of asphalt and asphalt materials, including: Marshall Testing, SuperPave Testing, Aggregate Testing (sieves, relative density testing, etc.), Rotary recovery of asphalt binder and Binder penetration testing.
  • Manage Day-to-Day Asphalt Lab Operations: Take responsibility for daily lab operations, including equipment maintenance and calibrations.
  • Accountability of Test Data: Review and take ownership of the test results produced in the lab ensuring results are logical and reports are free of obvious errors prior to senior review.
  • Resource Management: Prioritize testing based in timelines and deliverables ensuring testing can be complete in a timely manner or resources and additional support are coordinated prior to deadlines.
  • Lab Cleanliness: Maintain and clean and organized lab environment.
  • Quality Management: Ensure all procedures and work methods comply with internal Quality systems and follow applicable test standards.
  • Effective Communication: Communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and supervisors, providing relevant information and opinions when necessary.
  • Responsiveness to Supervisors: Respond promptly and positively to requests from supervisors.
  • Problem Solving & Team Participation: Engage fully in team problem-solving discussions and contribute thoughtfully to group decisions.
  • Organization & Time Management: Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills, ensuring all responsibilities are handled efficiently.
  • Technical writing: Technical report writing and communication will be required.
  • Research & Development: Tetra Tech strives to provide solutions for new and complex problems, and at times the asphalt laboratory will be used for various research and development testing programs which you would support and participate in.
  • Sampling of hot mix asphalt and asphalt materials including asphalt coring.
  • Helping to train and mentor junior and seasonal staff on field sampling of asphalt.
  • Support pavement investigation projects.
  • Construction Quality Control/Assurance sampling, monitoring and testing of asphalt.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.
