Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Postmedia Calgary (Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun) is seeking a full-time Assignment Editor to oversee day-to-day assigning of reporters and columnists. Excellent people skills, impeccable news judgment and the ability to multi-task within a fast-paced virtual newsroom are essential. The ideal candidate will not only have solid leadership ability, but will also thrive under deadline pressure and be a creative thinker. Generating ideas that lead to compelling content for digital, social and print platforms is a key part of the job.
Candidates need to demonstrate an understanding of news that matters to Calgary and southern Alberta. Exceptional organizational skills are also required, as is the ability to plan long-, medium- and short-term coverage. An understanding of breaking news, explanatory journalism and long features — and how all of these areas can serve and attract audience — is vital. The Assignment Editor position is a key position within the newsroom and this editor must be able to help drive results in a successful multimedia environment. This is largely a remote position, with occasional in-person meetings required.

WHO YOU ARE (QUALIFICATIONS):

  • You will have experience at a daily news organization in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • You have fluency in digital, print and social platforms.
  • You are a highly skilled journalist and editor — with superior verbal and written communication skills — who can quickly adapt to breaking news and evolving situations.
  • You excel as a leader and enjoy working with others, while being adept at balancing a multitude of tasks each day.
  • You are also a team player who enjoys diving into any task that arises.
  • A knowledge of CP style, an understanding of the ethical issues journalists face and a basic comprehension of relevant legal issues are relevant.
We thank in advance all applicants for their interest, however only those candidates under consideration will be contacted. Only candidates legally eligible to work in Canada will be considered. No phone calls or agencies please.
Postmedia Network Inc. is committed to providing accommodations for people with disabilities in all areas of the hiring process. If you require accommodation during the hiring process, please make your needs known in advance. Accommodation requests will be provided on an individual basis.
Postmedia Network Inc. is committed to employment equity and an inclusive barrier-free selection process and work environment. Postmedia Network Inc. encourages applications from women, aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities

Responsibilities:

  • Attend daily news meetings with other newsroom editors to plan and discuss content for Postmedia Calgary websites, digital products and print products.
  • Supervise newsroom reporters and columnists; assign content; keep track of daily news flow; coach for performance.
  • Liaise with other editors to plan and execute longer term features and explanatory journalism. Work with other editors to be part of an occasional weekend on-call rotation.
  • Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Assignment Editor will assist on new projects that grow audience and enhance content offerings in areas including digital, video, newsletters, social media, print and special products.
  • Create news skeds of what content is arriving each day.
  • Produce reporter schedules, oversee timesheets and perform other HR-related duties.
  • Some writing and editing is required with this position.
