Assistant Accounting Manager
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accounting Manager to join our mid-size public accounting firm. This role is perfect for an emerging accounting professional looking to advance their career while supporting the Accounting Manager in multi-entity accounting operations, financial consolidations, and process improvements. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical skills, the ability to work independently on assigned tasks, and readiness to take on increasing responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting Support
Support the Accounting Manager in executing monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
Prepare and own assigned journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial schedules for manager review
Take responsibility for specific areas of the general ledger as assigned
Conduct variance analysis and investigate discrepancies in financial data
Prepare draft financial statements and supporting documentation for manager review
Assist in the preparation of management reports and financial analysis packages
Multi-Entity Bookkeeping & Consolidations Support
Own day-to-day bookkeeping activities for assigned entities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
Assist the Accounting Manager with multi-entity consolidation processes, including preparation of intercompany reconciliations and elimination entries
Maintain organized and accurate accounting records for all assigned entities
Support the implementation of consistent accounting policies across business units
Prepare consolidation workpapers and supporting schedules
Process Support & Controls Compliance
Execute and maintain established accounting processes and internal controls
Ensure compliance with documented procedures and identify potential gaps or improvements
Assist in documenting accounting procedures and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Contribute ideas and support process improvement initiatives
Help test and implement new accounting systems or process changes
Team Collaboration & Development
Work under the direction of the Accounting Manager while demonstrating increasing independence
Coordinate with junior accounting staff and provide guidance on routine matters
Support internal and external audit activities by preparing requested documentation and responding to inquiries
Collaborate with cross-functional teams on various projects and initiatives
Participate in training and professional development activities
Other Duties
Stay current with accounting standards and best practices
Assist with tax preparation support as needed
Support ad-hoc analysis and special projects
Take on additional responsibilities as skills develop
Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
Professional accounting designation preferred or in-progress: CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CA (Chartered Accountant), or ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)
Experience
Minimum 2-3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a public accounting firm or multi-entity corporate environment
Experience with month-end close processes and account reconciliations
Exposure to multi-entity bookkeeping or consolidations is an asset
Understanding of internal controls and accounting processes
Technical Skills
Solid knowledge of GAAP/IFRS and financial reporting standards
Proficiency with accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, SAP, or similar)
Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis
Willingness to learn new systems and technologies
