Description Assistant Animal Care Curator-African Safari We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated leader to join a high performing team of animal care professionals. The Assistant Animal Care Curator is an individual who is passionate about continuing to elevate the standards of animal care and wellbeing on the African Safari Team. About the Role: The Assistant Animal Care Curator will assist the Animal Care Curator in managing area staff in addition to the many animal residents of the African Safari. The African Safari includes multiple dynamic, mixed species habitats that are home to a wide variety of iconic large African herbivores, many species of birds, medium and small sized antelope, small mammals and medium sized carnivores. Key Responsibilities: Provide leadership and oversight by creating a feedback rich environment, coaching and accountability of animal care team. Create, revise and amend standard operating procedures and protocols in a timely manner. Ensure all departmental and institutional policies, protocols and procedures are implemented. Understanding of AZA accreditation and USDA standards. Able to recognize inspection concerns and address issues with minimal guidance. Develop and initiate engaging animal programs and interaction with guests of all ages. Contribute to The Living Desert’s educational programs, presenting animal-related connections and behind-the-scenes tours for guests. Requirements Experience Required: We are looking for an individual who has the ability to make good decisions regarding the well-being of animals, staff and guests while working for the greater good of the zoo. Ideally you have: AA, AS or higher degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science or other related degree and at least one year of exotic animal experience preferred. Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience with animal training and public presentations is a plus. Supervisory experiences in an animal-related field preferred.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Animal Care Curator will support the Animal Care Curator in managing staff and overseeing the animal residents within the African Safari area, which features mixed-species habitats.
