Overview:
The mission of the City of Boston Assessing Department is to accurately collect data, assess property at its full and fair cash value, and provide prompt and courteous service to the public. The Assessing Department is a leader in municipal valuation and seeks to maintain that status by attracting talented and experienced individuals to our core staffing.
The backbone of the City’s valuation system, Assessor Trainee’s will develop a deep knowledge of our neighborhoods and property valuation. Work includes frequent trips throughout the City to review and update property attributes and converse with our residents. Attention to detail is a must.
Trainees are provided with the opportunity to become Accredited Assessors through coursework provided by the Massachusetts Association of Assessing Officers (MAAO) and the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO).
Position reports to the unit manager or assigned supervisor of a higher grade.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide prompt, professional, and courteous assistance to the public.
  • Perform property inspections and collect and verify data with a high level of accuracy.
  • Review sales transactions.
  • Review commercial property submissions, such as inventory listings or income and expense data.
  • Data entry and analysis.
  • Respond to constituent questions on their property values.
  • Willingness to travel to all City neighborhoods.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Massachusetts Accredited Assessor designation is required, the accreditation can be obtained on the job during the first three (3) years of employment.
  • Must have and maintain a current, valid Massachusetts Driver’s License, and a safe driving record.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Basic math and analytic ability.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite is a plus.
