GENERAL SUMMARY

The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a 10-month position responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of student-athletes including: injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation, as well as coordinating athletic training services for all athletic programs. The assistant athletic trainer duties are to prevent, evaluate, manage, and rehabilitate injuries and illnesses related to sports and adhere to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA), National Dance Association (NDA), Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) Odessa College’s policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree and licensed to practice athletic training in the state of Texas (Licensed Athletic Trainer – LAT)
  • Knowledge of human physiology and anatomy, ability to evaluate injuries and determine treatment.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an athletic trainer, preferably in a collegiate setting.
  • Strong clinical evaluation and diagnostic skills.
  • Proven ability to establish positive and effective working relationships with students, administration and community.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record..

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine and state (LAT) and national (ATC) athletic trainer certifications.
  • Established record of successful experience teaching and supervising student athletic trainers.
  • Demonstrated leadership and success in college level athletic training program.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to qualify and maintain current CDL.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the college’s assistant athletic trainer.
  • Assist the Athletic Trainer to recruit and supervise quality student athletic trainers while meeting the standards set to ensure college compliance and success while staying within allocated scholarship budget.
  • Maintain flex schedule to accommodate treatment, practice and game travel.
  • Supervise student athletic trainers as appropriate.
  • Serve as kinesiology adjunct in the School of Health and Sciences, teaching 2 relevant KINE courses.
  • Maintain established individual and student athletic trainer GPA goals while monitoring pace and progress through documented and scheduled study halls, assigned tutors, faculty conversations, and review of weekly and semester grades.
  • Ensure timely advising and registration of all student athletic trainers registered before first class day of term.
  • Provide coverage for all sports games and practices including travel as assigned by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Develop and implement injury prevention programs.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care for athletic injuries.
  • Conduct injury assessments and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Design and oversee rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
  • Maintain accurate records of evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation progress.
  • Collaborate with coaches to ensure athletes are ready to return to play safely.
  • Assist the Athletic Trainer to manage the athletic training room, including budget, inventory and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including state licensure and certification requirements.
  • Coordinate health insurance related processes and their relationship to billing and claims.
  • Assist in the process of drug testing.
  • Maintain state licensure.
  • Support college activities and special events through attendance and/or participation.
  • Use interpersonal skills and make sound judgments.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.
