Position Description:

  • The primary function of the Assistant Chemical Hygiene Officer will be to support the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) and additional EHS staff to ensure compliance through management of programs related to regulated chemicals such as chemical inventory and Maximum Allowable Quantities (MAQ), OSHA regulated chemicals, the university chemical security program, toxic compounds, carcinogens, and maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws. The position will conduct risk assessments for chemical use and new chemical evaluation; collaborate with Principal Investigators, laboratory staff, and operational staff to review and audit operations, ensuring safe use, storage, and disposal of chemicals; evaluates engineering controls; conduct or participate on-site inspections and assessments and provide recommendations for compliance and corrective actions. This position will support in maintaining and implementing the comprehensive campus laboratory safety program related to general lab safety, chemical hygiene/safety, process safety, high hazards, physical hazards, etc.
  • Provides support to the University Radiation Safety Program and the University Research Safety Program and other sections of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety; provides technical support for the laboratory surveillance program (biological; chemical; and radiological). Facilitates research and radiation safety compliance including performance of laboratory risk assessments, compliance inspections, contamination surveys and permit renewals. Process radioactive materials orders and renewals for radioactive permits; receipt and delivery of radioactive materials packages
  • Provides analysis of existing data and data structures and satisfies ad-hoc reporting/analysis requests. Creates reporting specifications for new reports/dashboards/analytical tools and assists in data validation; ensures integrity, accessibility, and accuracy of reports/dashboards and data structures. Assist with the development and implementation of online training programs in the areas of research safety.

Position Requires:

  • Participate in the Environmental Health and Safety Emergency Response Team, including potential 24-hour emergency calls.
  • Comply with medical surveillance requirements, including medical clearance for respiratory protection, DOT physicals, drug testing and vaccination protocols.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical including medical clearance to wear a respirator. Capable of wearing PPE including steel toe shoes/boots; eye, face, and hand protection; respiratory protection (negative pressure half-face or full-face respirator); and other protective equipment or clothing as required.
  • Will require success completion of a criminal background check and the individual must successfully complete within 90 days of employment the Trustworthy and Reliable process for access to areas of increased controls.
  • This position may involve working in environments that include exposure to potential hazardous materials (chemical, biological and radiological). This position’s job duties may take place in laboratories, patient care areas, animal research facilities, and other research specific sites.
  • Qualified candidates should rely on a degree of professional experience. May still be acquiring higher level of knowledge and skills. Can utilize general industry knowledge and professional experience in the application of concepts, principles, and technical capabilities to perform varied tasks. Works on projects of moderate scope and complexity; apply judgment within defined parameters. Receives general guidance; may receive more detailed instruction on new projects. Work reviewed for sound reasoning and accuracy. Exchanges information on routine and non-routine matters.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 2 years of relevant experience required. 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred
