JOB DESCRIPTION

Under general direction, participates in and supervises others in the enforcement of the Building and Maintenance Codes, and in the administration of the permit processing and records maintenance operations of the Division. Serves as the Chief Building Inspector in that official’s absence as required.
Please note that this contract is currently in negotiations, which may have an impact on the salary.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of the State building code and property maintenance code and principles of zoning regulations and their enforcement.
  • Extensive knowledge of the methods, materials and trade practices used in building construction, alteration or repair. Knowledge of the principles of structural engineering and design.
  • Ability to read and interpret building construction plans, drawings and specifications. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to conduct effective field inspections and to enforce orders firmly and courteously based on the findings of such inspections. Familiarity with modern office procedures related to building code enforcement, including computerized office procedures. Ability to use or learn to use computers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town employees and the public.

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school, and five (5) years of experience in building construction, design or supervision including one (1) year of experience performing construction inspection work and complex plan review work. Licensed as a Building Official by the State Building Inspector as required by Section 29-261 of the Connecticut State Statutes. Must possess valid CT motor vehicle operator’s license.
