Description An Assistant Chief Engineer assists the Chief Engineer in managing a facility's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, overseeing maintenance, supervising staff, managing budgets, ensuring safety, and handling emergency repairs for complex building operations, often stepping in for the Chief Engineer in their absence, with responsibilities including staff training, procurement, and optimizing energy management. Key Responsibilities Operations & Maintenance: Directs daily upkeep, preventive maintenance, and repairs of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and life safety systems. Staff Supervision: Schedules work, assigns tasks, trains, mentors, and evaluates maintenance personnel. Budget & Procurement: Assists in managing operational/capital budgets, orders supplies, parts, and equipment, and evaluates contractor performance. System Management: Monitors Energy Management Systems (EMS), ensures compliance with regulations, and improves system efficiency. Emergency Response: Provides 24/7 emergency support and leads response to system failures or hazards. Project Support: Offers technical input for capital projects, renovations, and strategic planning initiatives. Typical Duties Conducts routine inspections and evaluates the physical condition of the facility. Maintains accurate logs, records, and documentation for work orders and equipment. Trains staff on safe operating procedures and new technologies. Manages inventory of spare parts and supplies. Acts as the lead engineer when the Chief Engineer is unavailable. Required Skills & Qualifications Strong technical knowledge in building systems (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, etc.). Leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities. Experience with work order systems, facility management software, and Microsoft Office. Often requires relevant engineering certifications or degrees, plus several years of experience.
