Description
Department of Statistics and Data Science Assistant Computer Officer Join our technical team to build and support the Department’s computing environment for learning, teaching and research. You will play a key role in maintaining our on‑premises and computing infrastructure, supporting High Performance Computing (HPC), and preparing for Conference IT support. Duties include (a) operating and enhancing the Department’s IT infrastructure (servers, storage, networking, firewalls) across Linux, Windows and macOS; (b) administering Linux/Windows servers and virtualization, and managing public IPs, gateways, SSH jump hosts and access controls; (c) setting up and supporting HPC clusters and GPU workloads for research and teaching, and co-ordinating vendor maintenance; (d) managing cloud resources (e.g., Linux VMs) and computer laboratories, planning and executing upgrades and preventive maintenance; (e) monitoring system performance, security and availability, and implementing best practices and documentation; (f) providing day‑to‑day technical support and user enablement for staff; (g) assisting in equipment grant proposals and procurement of computing hardware/software; (h) representing the Department in IT matters; and (i) performing other tasks as assigned. Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related disciplines; (ii) hands‑on experience with Linux administration and scripting, and solid knowledge of Windows/Windows Server and macOS; (iii) familiarity with HPC or distributed computing (GPU/cluster scheduling, containers, or similar); (iv) good understanding of networking fundamentals (routing, VLANs, firewalls, VPN/SSH); (v) proficiency in at least 1 programming/scripting language (e.g., C/C++, Python, Bash), with the ability to read/write technical documentation; (vi) strong problem‑solving, communication, and organisational skills; and (vii) a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Cantonese and Putonghua). Having exposure to scientific computing stacks (e.g., R, Matlab, CUDA) and Linux packaging/automation (e.g., Ansible), and experience in website/content management or multimedia tools are advantageous. Prior experience in academic/research environments and supporting computer laboratories is preferred. Appointment will initially be made on a 1-year contract, renewable subject to good performance and mutual agreement.
