Description General Summary: Assist in monitoring and operating the turbine/generator, boiler, conveying systems, coal drying facility and all related auxiliary systems from the central control room or from remote locations on the plant site to assure safe and efficient plant operations. Key Responsibilities: Monitor turbine/generators, boiler equipment, and auxiliary equipment to ensure proper, efficient, and safe operation of all assigned equipment to determine impacts to the plant’s operation. · Respond to events and make decisions during routine and emergency conditions to minimize health and safety risks and damage to equipment. · Assist others in the plant during emergency / upset conditions. · Clean assigned equipment to provide safe working conditions and optimize equipment efficiency. · Complete rounds and readings on all required equipment, report any issues or abnormalities. Assist in the control room as needed · Assist the control room operator in responding to calls, making decisions, and directing others during routine and emergency conditions. · Assist the control room operator with operating and monitoring of the control board during times of abnormal conditions. Provide status of plant conditions or situations that may affect plant output or performance. · Control and monitor commercial coal drying facility from the control room · Understand and follow REC’s safety and environmental policies and procedures. Report all noncompliance and work to support all aspects of REC’s environmental program goals. Communicate information about plant operation, equipment problems or malfunctions and other abnormalities to members of the operating shift. · Report all unsafe acts or conditions that may cause injury to plant personnel or damage equipment. · Write detailed work orders that include accurate problem, location descriptions, and any troubleshooting that has been done. · Apply correct clearance procedures for isolating, switching, releasing, or restoring equipment to service to facilitate repairs, reduce risk of personal injury, and prevent damage to equipment. · Collect data and maintain detailed daily logs of operating conditions to document abnormal equipment operating conditions to provide equipment history for trouble shooting and problem solving. Conduct a thorough shift turnover using this data. · Assist in providing maintenance to plant equipment within the scope of individual abilities. This may include performing tasks independently or assisting operation technicians and maintenance personnel while learning to complete maintenance tasks. · Respond to plant emergencies such as fires or hazmat situations under the direction of the incident commander · Complete other duties as directed · Demonstrate REC employee competencies and values to help accomplish team objectives, department and plant goals along with REC’s strategic imperatives, including customer and business focus and environmental stewardship. · Employ a high level of team building through active participation, knowledge sharing and mentoring, positive and constructive communication techniques with a focus on point to point, as well as individual responsibility and accountability. · Mentor each other to achieve success. Must be able to travel to various locations throughout the plant and facility grounds. Conditions in the plant and facility grounds may include extreme temperatures, noise levels, and heights. There will be overtime, and/or working weekends and infrequent overnight travel. This position requires the ability to occasionally to frequently sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 20-50 pounds frequently and bilateral carry up to 100 pounds on rare occasion. The ability to climb, balance, work at heights and work with arms above your head occasionally up to frequently. Ability to occasionally up to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist and squat, work on even and uneven surfaces and ability to work occasionally in confined space areas. Ability to frequently push, pull, carry, grasp and finger objects. Subject to frequent vibration and hazards and on occasion exposed to fumes, dust or mist. Must wear protective equipment when required. Must be able to differentiate colors, have vision ability to encompass close-up and distant work, and the ability to speak and hear. Must be able to wear/use SCBA, full face respirator, half mask, and a particulate respirator. This position requires working a rotating swing shift. Schedules shall be any combination of eight, ten or twelve hour shifts and includes days, afternoons, nights weekends and holidays. Requirements Job Criteria: Education & Experience: Associate degree in Applied Science in power plant or process technology or equivalent experience is required. A minimum three years of coal-fired generating power plant experience or three years’ experience operating comparable turbine/generator and auxiliary systems is preferred. Successful completion of the REC assistant control operator qualifications required. Must have a valid driver’s license. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities · Knowledge of electrical circuits, voltage, amperage, excitation, control principles of relaying, turbine generator construction and operation. · Ability to read and understand P&IDs, logic diagrams, procedure manuals and other reference materials. · Understand plant design, control principles, interlocks, permissive and operating parameters of all systems and their relationship to safe operation of a power station. · Knowledge of the physical location and operating procedures of all plant equipment. · Knowledge and understanding of computer-based plant control systems, and knowledge of basic personal computer skills. · Knowledge of basic math skills necessary to calculate ramp rates and convert measurements from % to scale. · Working knowledge of Maximo and Eclipse software packages. · Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and written. · Ability to think clearly and act quickly in times of emergency. · Must understand operations of various pumps and valves. · Must know the physical location of unit equipment for the purpose of directing other personnel to appropriate locations. · Ability to sit for long periods while monitoring the plant control systems · Ability to detect equipment status changes on LCD panels. · Ability to successfully complete control operator qualification within (5) years of taking the position. · Ability to become a qualified ambulance driver and completed CPR training. · Ability and responsibility to work safely alone and with others while following REC safety rules, certifications and procedures. · Ability and responsibility to ensure security procedures are followed including immediate notification of potential incidents.
