POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Assistant Controller is an integral leader of the Finance Team, working under the guidance of the Controller. This position is responsible for managing the organization’s financial operations, ensuring compliance with State Cost Principles and GAAP, and assisting with financial reporting and analysis. Accounting activities include overseeing day to day accounting operations, preparing and reviewing journal entries, preparing and reviewing account reconciliations, supporting payroll, designing and monitoring process improvements, and monitoring adherence to internal controls.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Ability to produce accurate financial reporting meeting grantor requirements including DMHAS and DDS
  • Ability to work independently and lead a team to find solutions and execute projects
  • Exhibits professionalism, resourceful problem solving, and diplomacy
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail including the ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and judgment
  • Ability to work flexibly in high pressure environment to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills that can quickly identify trends and consequences
  • Strong communication skills that are effective in communicating with senior management, auditors, departments and staff
  • Demonstrated adherence to regulations, laws, policies and procedures

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting and leadership experience with a preference for someone with a CPA or CMA designation
  • Experience with internal control design, State Cost Principles and GAAP, preference for someone with DMHAS or DDS reporting
  • Expert Microsoft Excel skills required including pivot tables and VLOOKUP’s
  • Strong computer skills including implementing new systems and comfort with import/export protocols
  • Must be able to commute to New Haven and work onsite
