POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Corporate Services is currently recruiting for an Assistant Controller to work at our Shepard office location (9423 Shepard Road SE. Calgary, Alberta T2C 4R6). The ideal candidate will help ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain a strong control environment, and support both internal and external stakeholders. This role is a key partner to the Controller and will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, support budgeting and forecasting, and help drive process improvements.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):Financial Accounting and Reporting (50%)

• Oversee general accounting functions, including GL, AR, AP, fixed assets, and payroll accounting
• Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
• Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with ASPE
• Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and accounting standards
• Assist with technical accounting issues and the implementation of new accounting standards

Budgeting, Forecasting and Financial Analysis (25%)

• Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
• Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, and other departments, providing financial insights
• Support financial review of commercial decisions and agreements

Management and Continuous Improvement (25%)

• Manage and mentor accounting staff; assist with professional development and performance reviews
• Identify and implement process improvements to streamline operations and improve accuracy
• Support ERP and system improvements or upgrades

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CPA in progress preferred)
• 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting and/or industry experience
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
• Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics)
• Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with financial reporting tools
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams
• Ability to communicate and work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and build effective relationships.
• Proactive mindset, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
