Job Title: Assistant Director of Facilities & MaintenanceLocation: District LeadershipReports To: Director of Facilities & MaintenanceSubordinates: Facilities & Maintenance TeamPosition Type: Full-Time, ExemptSalary Range: $48,000 - $66,000 Based on ExperiencePosition Summary: The Assistant Director of Facilities & Maintenance plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and efficient operation of Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public Schools buildings, grounds, and mechanical systems. This is a hands-on, leadership role that assists in managing daily maintenance operations, supervises custodial services, supports capital improvement initiatives, and serves as the primary facilities contact in the absence of the Director. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, and a solid understanding of safety and building code compliance.This job description outlines the core duties and responsibilities for the position. The ideal candidate should be flexible and adaptable in meeting the evolving needs of the District.Key Responsibilities: Facilities Management & Maintenance: Oversee maintenance and repair of all school buildings, systems, and grounds.Perform skilled maintenance work across multiple trades: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general building systems.Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to extend equipment life and avoid disruptions.Respond promptly to work orders and ensure timely resolution.Supervise custodial services and ensure consistent cleanliness, sanitation, and upkeep across campuses.Operations & Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety and building regulations, including OSHA and ADA requirements.Conduct routine inspections of facilities to identify safety hazards and recommend corrective actions.Assist in the development and enforcement of emergency procedures, safety protocols, and crisis management plans.Maintain accurate records related to inspections, repairs, regulatory compliance, and work orders.Computerized Maintenance ManagementAdminister the schools Computerized Maintenance Management System (JIRA) to manage work order intake, prioritization, task tracking, and performance reporting.Generate data-driven insights from JIRA to guide maintenance planning and improvements.Budget & Vendor Management: Assist in managing the departmental budget and tracking expenditures.Coordinate with and oversee vendors, service providers, and contractors for repairs, maintenance, and construction projects.Maintain and manage inventory of tools, parts, and maintenance supplies.Negotiate vendor contracts to ensure service quality and cost-effectiveness.Project Management & Capital Improvements: Support the planning and execution of capital improvement projects and facility upgrades.Coordinate logistics for renovations and construction, minimizing disruption to school operations.Monitor project timelines, budgets, and contractor performance.Leadership & Team Collaboration: Supervise and evaluate custodial and maintenance staff, including training, coaching, and performance feedback.Provide daily direction and support to ensure team productivity and accountability.Collaborate closely with school leadership, faculty, and staff to identify and address facility-related needs.Serve as the point of contact for facility-related emergencies, including occasional after-hours or weekend response.Partner with Human Resources and Executive Leadership to ensure compliance with employment policies and performance standards.Qualifications & Requirements: Required: High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational training in maintenance or trades preferred.35 years of progressive experience in facilities or building maintenance, including 2+ years in a supervisory or lead technician role.Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and custodial operations.Familiarity with Massachusetts building codes, safety regulations, and environmental compliance standards.Proficiency in CMMS platforms (e.g., JIRA) and Microsoft Office Suite.Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.Valid Massachusetts drivers license required.Availability for emergency response outside of regular hours as needed.Preferred: Associates or Bachelors degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field.Trade license or certifications (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, or electrical).OSHA 10 or 30 certification.Prior experience working in a school or public educational environment.Work Environment: Regularly required to stand, walk, lift (up to 50 lbs), climb ladders, and perform hands-on maintenance tasks.Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.May require occasional work in confined spaces or at heights.Work involves exposure to dust, noise, non-toxic chemicals, and typical maintenance conditions.Ability to operate tools, equipment, and machinery as required.Frequent movement across school campuses, including walking between buildings and up/down staircases.The noise level varies by activity and location; generally moderate but can be high during active maintenance work.Additional Requirements: Background check and fingerprinting as required by Massachusetts state regulations.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Completion of any required professional development or certifications as mandated by the district.Important Note: Applicants who are hired for this position and are found to have provided falsified or inaccurate information during the application process are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.Compensation and Benefits: Full-Time, Exempt Position with compensation based on relevant experience.
