JOB DESCRIPTION:

JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Director for Residential Life will focus on residence education and coordination of our residential curriculum. This AD is responsible for providing oversight in the creation, implementation, and continuation of our residential curriculum, and lead a co-ed residential First Year community. Provides supervision to live-in Residential Life staff and indirect supervision to resident assistants. Leading this community will consist of various administrative and operational functions associated with the day-to-day management of this community. The Assistant Director is upline/on-call to provide guidance and procedural clarification to after-hours incidents in all residential facilities. The position is a 12-month live-in position.

Responsibilities

Community & Student Development

  • Create and implement programs and activities for resident students that foster academic success, career exploration, wellness, diversity, community, leadership and professional development.
  • Manage and mediate conflict.
  • Provide individual and group assistance to residential students.
  • Make counseling referrals for individual students or staff when needed.
  • Create opportunities for leadership development for residents of the community.
  • Advise community council and support the activities of the Residence Housing Association and/or other housing organizations through attending meetings and/or advising projects.
  • Support diversity and inclusion in residential facilities.
  • Develop working relationships between residential life student groups and other student organizations, promoting collaboration.
  • Respond and resolve crises in residential facilities, as necessary.
  • Project a high degree of visibility and availability to students and staff.
  • Provide leadership for key residential life-sponsored annual events, including but not limited to Welcome Weekend, Kids & Sibs Weekend, and others, when identified.
  • Support residential life student organizations, including RHA, NRHH and Community Councils. Residential Life will seek collaboration in programming and provide appropriate advising for each organization, including budget administration and maintenance.
  • Develop and sustain a residential curriculum that includes constant assessment of student learning, sense of belonging, and student retention.

Administration

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate Resident Directors and student paraprofessional. In-direct supervision of RA staff from other First Year communities as well. Make recommendations on personnel decisions, as necessary.
  • Ensure that Resident Assistant programming requirements are met and track budgeting of own community. Provide oversight of programming requirements and budget tracking of two Resident Directors of First Year communities.
  • Serve as upline/on-duty for resident director, providing guidance and resolution for matters involving residential students. Upline responsibility includes holidays when the university is closed for business.
  • Contribute to the overall administration of the residential facilities, including the formulation of policy, operations and procedures.
  • Lead the efforts in creating a residential curricular approach through leading colleagues and resident assistants in developing an educational priority, learning goals, learning outcomes, and engagement strategies to achieve a residential curricular approach.
  • Oversee the implementation of our residential curriculum. This would include the training and development of colleagues and resident assistants in the strategies to meet the learning goals and outcomes.
  • Assist in creation, monitoring, and management of a residential curriculum comprehensive assessment plan.
  • Maintain the continuous improvement of the curriculum based on the assessment data gathered throughout the academic year.
  • Update the curriculum for the next academic year based on the assessment data analysis in Spring/Summer semesters.
  • Maintain regular office hours, as well as provide coverage in central office, as needed.
  • Serve as facility manager of residential facilities and surrounding grounds.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of Health and Safety inspections of designated residential facility.
  • Maintain and submit records, reporting as assigned.
  • Work with other administrative offices and University committees as necessary.
  • Manage electronics and software including Maxient, Engage, Ellucian, and Canvas.
  • Participate in the administration of the room assignment process.
  • Maintain accurate room occupancy data in cooperation with University Housing, assisting with check-in/check-out procedures and damage assessments.
  • Support summer conference administration along with Student Affairs and University strategic priorities.
  • Represent Residential Life and/or Housing, as necessary at university functions, including orientation, open houses, etc.

Conduct

  • Administer the University’s student conduct process for students residing in residential facilities, determining level of responsibility and imposing appropriate sanctions, when necessary.
