POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director/On the Rise Academy Exceptional Student Education Coach is a critical member of the Talent Pipelines team and is essential to the success of On the Rise Academy, our district-based alternative route teacher certification program. Assistant Director/On the Rise Academy Exceptional Student Education Coach supports the development of our special education alternative route to certification program and will build special education coursework for On the Rise Academy Fellows.¿ Assistant Director/On the Rise Academy Exceptional Student Education Coach coaches program participants in 1:1 and small group settings and collaborates with content support teams and school administrators to support the development of On the Rise Academy Fellows. The Assistant Director/On the Rise Academy Exceptional Student Education Coach has experience in special education law, development of Individual Education Plans, curriculum development, coaching, and is adept at supporting teachers in K-5 elementary, secondary math, secondary science, and Exceptional Student Education (special education) areas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree in Special Education is strongly preferred
  • Valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate (or equivalent out-of-state license) in related content area required with special education endorsement.
  • K-12 classroom teaching experience required, with at least 5 years’ experience in at least one of the following certification areas strongly preferred: elementary, exceptional student education (special education).
  • At least 3 years of instructional leadership experience including coaching teachers, coaching or leading special education teachers, and/or designing and facilitating professional learning for pre-service and/or early career teachers strongly preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the achievement of the mission, goals, and objectives of Detroit Public Schools Community District; support school staff to implement DPSCD’s vision for excellent instruction through the instructional framework.
  • Contribute toward the development of ESE (special education) programming and coursework requirements.
  • Contribute toward the development of ESE instructional materials, assessments, resources, and guidance documents for On the Rise Academy Fellows.
  • Assist in the implementation of the On the Rise Academy and ensure a robust, practice-based program is consistently delivered for aspiring and new teachers.
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group coaching and professional learning for novice teachers, including participants in On the Rise Academy.
  • Work with leaders in Curriculum and Instruction, including Exceptional Student Education (ESE), ESE Lead Administrators, school-based ESE leads and principals to guide the implementation of On the Rise Academy; work with content area and school leaders to design and facilitate strong school support and professional development offerings, including job-embedded supports for Fellows.
  • Assist with On the Rise Academy pre-service institute experience, working across content areas to provide assistance to institute staff members and improve instructional skills; provide information and leadership in the development of Institute goals, action plans, instructional techniques, and innovative practices.
  • Appraise staff performance including the programmatic evaluation of On the Rise Academy Fellows and Continuing Teachers.¿¿
  • Demonstrate a commitment to antiracism and the affirmation of student and staff identities, center racial equity and inclusion, and bring practical solutions to issues of equity and inclusion in classrooms, schools, and on the team.
  • Gather and analyze data to evaluate the effectiveness of On the Rise Academy programming and propose refinements to strategy and approach to program coursework, school improvement, materials, and professional learning as a result.
  • Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
