POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Engineer II is responsible for inspecting Public Works construction projects within the County’s right of way to ensure compliance with plans, contract specifications, laws, and regulations.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years’ experience in construction supervision and inspection, including storm water management facilities design and roadway / drainage design issues.
  • Must possess good written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  • Thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations relative to construction and inspection of engineering projects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to critically review plans and field conditions to assure a minimum of adverse effects on existing and proposed County facilities.
  • Cost estimating experience.
  • Surveying experience.
  • Knowledge of County government operating procedures

Responsibilities
  • Monitors and approves the monthly payment estimates and vouchers and authorizes change orders to assure that the project cost will not exceed legal and budgetary limits.
  • Supervises plant inspection and on-site inspection of equipment and materials for compliance with specifications.
  • Reviews detailed sketches or layouts of intricate aspects of engineering plans to assure accuracy and compliance.
  • Investigates complaints relating to Public Works construction projects and drafts report with recommendations to resolve complaints.
  • Functions under detailed guidelines dictated by the laws of the State of New Jersey and the plans and specifications for the various construction projects.
  • Maintains contact with governmental agencies, State Department of Transportation, Engineering Division Engineers, County Departments, utility companies and municipal enforcement agencies to exchange information and coordinate activities during construction projects.
  • Reviews and approves construction of projects in compliance with plans and specifications for capital improvement projects.
  • Makes field changes with approval of project Designer, County Engineer, and Board of Commissioners.
  • Works additional hours as needed on various construction sites and to respond to emergency calls.
  • Works with various governmental agencies in the design and repaving of parking lots.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
