GCS Group is a well established St Albert & Edmonton based company with over 25 years of success in construction, landscaping, directional drilling, & Asphalt repairs. As we continue our growth trajectory, we are seeking a motivated Assistant Financial Controller to support the financial health of our operations. This is a critical role for a detail-oriented and organized professional with construction industry experience who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in the construction sector
  • Familiarity with construction accounting software (ex. QuickBooks desktop, or similar)
  • Advanced MS Excel skills and experience with financial reporting tools
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and WIP reporting
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in construction, landscaping or related industries
  • Knowledge of LMN, Smartsheet, DEXT, or similar project management/AP automation tools is an asset
  • Background in managing intercompany transactions
  • Proficiency in Spanish is an asset
Responsibilities
  • Assist in managing all accounting operations including billing, A/R, A/P, GL, cost accounting, and revenue recognition
  • Oversee and ensure timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close
  • Support financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes
  • Analyze and report on job costs, work-in-progress (WIP), and margin trends
  • Assist with internal and external audits
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and construction-specific financial requirements
  • Collaborate closely with project managers and field teams on financial matters
  • Supervise and mentor a team of accountants, AP/AR specialists, and payroll staff
