OVERVIEW:

Quinnipiac University is seeking an experienced legal professional to join its Office of the General Counsel as Assistant General Counsel, with a focus on contracts. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, this role provides legal advice across a wide range of matters, with primary responsibility for drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts that support the University’s academic and operational functions.
The Assistant General Counsel will serve as a key partner to departments managing student placements, vendor relationships, and employment-related agreements. The ideal candidate will bring strong attention to detail, excellent client service skills, and the ability to manage a high volume of transactional work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
This position is an in-person on-ground position with the flexibility to be hybrid.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Member in good standing of the State Bar of Connecticut or member in good standing of another state bar and able to gain admission to Connecticut within 6 months of employment
  • Minimum 3 years of previous experience as a licensed attorney working in a law firm, judicial clerkship, or in-house legal department
  • Strong transactional background, which includes experience with commercial agreements, intellectual property, and drafting and negotiating contracts, affiliation agreements, MOUs, NDAs, and other documents related to a variety of commercial, financial, and operational matters
  • Legal experience working in higher education, non-profit, and/or government law
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and Connecticut laws and regulations impacting grants and contracts.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and problem-solving ability, with a pragmatic approach to complex legal and institutional issues
  • Ability to work independently on routine contractual matters, to recognize issues of institutional importance, and to keep the General Counsel appropriately informed
  • Analytical and legal research skills
  • Responsive and adaptable in assessing institutional challenges and recommending legally sound, practical solutions.
  • Exceptional judgment and integrity with ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from varied backgrounds.

Responsibilities
  • Review, revise, and negotiate a wide variety of contracts, including educational affiliation agreements (supporting clinical placements and internships), service and purchase agreements, employment-related contracts, and sponsorship agreements.
  • Provide timely and effective counsel to University officials regarding contract terms, risks, and compliance considerations.
  • Advise on and assist in the structuring of transactions, drafting, and negotiating necessary agreements, and performing due diligence activities.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners on strategic initiatives to advance the mission of the University and the objectives of leadership.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, protect relationships with key partners, and negotiate and resolve issues relating to contract performance, breach of contract issues, and other business disputes.
  • Counsel University departments on day-to-day operations and assist in managing risk by providing practical legal solutions to complex issues.
  • Conduct legal research to support contract development and institutional legal needs.
  • Build strong working relationships across departments to support legal services and foster institutional collaboration.
  • Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree
