Backed by SGS’s global legacy of over 140 years, we operate one of the largest networks of accredited laboratories and field facilities in Australia, with a network of more than 50 offices and laboratories and over 1,400 employees across Australia.
Our Construction Materials Testing (CMT) division supports critical infrastructure, mining, and construction projects through reliable, NATA accredited testing in line with Australian and international standards.
Job Description
Join our CMT team in Malaga and support our growing operations in concrete, aggregate, masonry, and rock mechanics testing. We are seeking Assistant Geotechnicians with hands-on experience or a strong interest in materials testing, especially in strength, durability, and compliance testing of construction materials.
This role will involve field sampling and laboratory-based testing in line with AS 1012, AS 1141, AS 4456, AS 4133, and other relevant Australian Standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and process samples of concrete, aggregate, rock, and masonry for laboratory testing.
  • Conduct field and lab-based tests such as:
  • Concrete slump and cylinder casting (AS 1012.3.1, 1012.9)
  • Aggregate grading and flakiness index (AS 1141 series)
  • Rock uniaxial compression and point load index (AS 4133 series)
  • Masonry block compressive strength (AS 4456.4)
  • Assist with equipment setup, calibration, and routine maintenance.
  • Record, log, and communicate test results accurately.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and NATA-compliant work environment.
  • Support other CMT tasks as required, including sampling, sample preparation, and field density testing.

What’s in it for you:

  • Work in a well-equipped, NATA-accredited lab with a focus on high quality construction materials testing.
  • Contribute to major infrastructure and mining projects across Western Australia.
  • Career pathways into Geotechnician and Senior Technician roles.
  • Supportive team culture focused on safety, development, and quality.
  • Remuneration in line with the SGS Australia Enterprise Agreement 2025, including overtime and shift rates where applicable.
  • Training provided for the right candidates.

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For in Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Certificate III or IV in Laboratory Techniques, Construction Materials Testing, or related field (preferred).
  • Previous experience in concrete, aggregate, rock, or masonry testing (field or lab).
  • Understanding of relevant Australian Standards (e.g., AS 1012, AS 1141, AS 4133, AS 4456).
  • Physically fit and comfortable handling heavy materials and outdoor work.
  • Current WA C Class Driver’s Licence (required).
  • White Card (preferred).
